; AN APPEAL TO THE PEOPLE
j OF LINCOLN COUNTY
i (By the County Agent)
j O'.vlng to tlio great value of the
drug made from the loaves of the Fox
. Glove for treatment of soldiers suffer
ing from shell shock, the Government
,1s anxious to obtain the maximum
j amount of this product nnd has ap
pealed to the people of Oregon for co
operation in harvesting and placing
the leaves of this plunt on the market.
This plant is known by many com
jmon names. The two mostly used
;nre Foxglove and Digitalis. Other
i names used are Fairy Gloves, Fairy
Cnp, Fairy Fingers, Fairy Thimbles.
! Folks' Gloves. Dog's Fingers. Ijirtv'..
Fingers, Lady's Thimble, Lion's
Mouth, Popdock, Scotch Mercury, Cot-
jtagera, Rabbit's Flower, and Throat-
wort, its botanical name is Digitalis
purpurea L.
The Foxglove Plant thrives excep
tionally well In Oregon and Is found
abundently In many parts of Lincoln
county. It would be a most patriotic
response bf the county's people who
are not otherwise actively engaged In
production or Industry, to set to work
gathering as much of this plant as pos-
i slble. Women and children especially,
have made as high as 3, 4, and 5 dol
lars a day in places where the leaves
have been gathered. A cent or a
cent and a quarter a pound for the
green leaves is usually paid the pick
ers, by the driers. School children
who are not busy after school hours,
could collect hundreds of pounds and
earn very attractive wages.
The leaves are the portions of the
plant used, and are dried before ship
ped to market The drying process is
rather a particular one hence the
pickers will do best by selling to the
driers, of which there are already at
least two In the county. More may
be established In the near future. An
nouncements will undoubtedly be
made In the near future, by the driers,
as to the details of picking, delivery
and price.
