HAWKINS U'M. SCAHT1I C. O. HAWKINS Interact en Time Deposit There has been considerable talk this fall of prolonging the fishing season in ordr to create larger food supply, but it seems that nothing in the way of definite information was ever sent out, and as a consequence many of the local fishermen did not know whether they could continue fishing or not. At the request of E. C. Montgomery we took the matter up with Sec retary of State, Ben W. Olcott, and the following reply was re ceived to our letter. November 20, 1917. Mr. P. N. Ilayden, Publisher, Lincoln County, Leader, Toledo, Oregon. Dear Sir: Your favor of the 17th, inst. lame to hand only this morning. I at once took the matter sub mitted nn with the Fish and Game Commission at Portland, by long distance, and they in formed me that the fishing sea son will end as specified in the law. They further state that .he matter in question has been ip before them many times lately for consideration and that it is impossible for the Commis sion to do other than to follow the law that the Commission ias power to shorten or even 2lose a season, but cannot pro long or lengthen it. In reference to this latter will say I under- tood from one of the news pa per boys here this morning, with whom I was discussing it, that the Attorney General had ren dered the Commission an opin ion to that effect. Trusting the above informa tion will be of use to you, and assuring you of my pleasure in being of service at any time, I remain Yours very truly. Ben. W. Olcott, Secretary of State. BOYS AND GIRLS AID SOCIETY The anuual Thanksgiving ap peal made by the Hoys' and Girls' Aid Society of Oregon to the school children and citizens of the state has always met with enthusiastic response 'from teachers, pupils and friends throughout Oregon. It is to be hoped that a similar appeal for food supplies and money will not jo unheeded in spite of the many duties" and economies which the war incurs. The Society Is practicing every legitimate economy, but with Its receiving home full to capacity, to say nothing of a waiting list, and with the price of milk three times what it was last spring, with a constantly decreasing income, The Hoys' and Girls' Aid Society cannot function to the best of its abil ity without the support of its DISCUSSION OF TAX ESTIMATES Notice is herefcy given thct the County Court of Lincoln, Oregon, will meet at the court house in the City of Toledo, County and State aforesaid, on Wednesday the 6th day of Decem ber 1917, at 10 o'clock A. Let every man who Is registered un der the selective service law, and that includes all between the a-ges of 21 and 30 years, inclus ive, pay careful heed to the changes that have been ordered by the Government in the meth od of selecting men for military service. These changes affect every man subject to the draft, with out exception. The new plan goes into effect on December 15. But on De cember 1, preparations for put ting it into effect will begin all over the United States. At that time all exemptions or discharges from military ser vice under the draft will auto matically be canceled. Exemptions hereafter will be based on an improved system whereby the Government will have exact knowledge of every registered man and his affairs. The basic principle of the new system is that those men are to be taken first who have no persons dependent on them. Under this clarification come single men, married men whose wives support them, married men who have habitually failed to support their families, or whose families are independent of them for support. Men in this class will be sub ject, to call first. They will be listed under what will be known as Class I. The married men and those with persons other than their wives or children immediately dependent on them for support, ;as well as those whose work is : necessary to industries essential to the war, including agriculture will be listed in other classes. There will be five classes in all. The effect of classification in classes below Class I will be to grant a temporary discharge from the draft, for men in these classes will not be called until the class or classes above theirs ha3 been exhausted. Hut before this system can be put into effect, Information must be gathered on which to make the classification of each man. To obtain this information Total estimated receipts, 276.00 and t0 compJie it afterward, the Government has prepared books faired Questionnaires.
