COAL OIL, THE GALLON PHONE 9005 TOLEDO, OREGON The Newnort News is sore, and when it is prre it always takes a fling at Toledo. Its lat est attack of bile was brought on by failure of the went road bonding measure, and it goes on as follows, "the voters of the county have deliberately turned Idown a gift of $200,000 from the ! state highway commission and jnrobably as much more from the Federal government, and will continue to wallow in the mud, and all on account of the con Ijsumate selfishness of Toledo." li'Now wouldn't that rati' you, slats, ana we certainly are ashamed of our selfishness. Newport certainly displayed a noble spirit of self sacrifice when by act of the li'ft legisla ture it hart itself set off in a dis trict by its sflf, a -id removed from under the jurisdiction of I j the County Court, so far as road taxing aivl miliums was con cerned. Then p.;;?i:i it was very generous in c ?.: terhvs; the roads into Newport as outlined under ,the bonding act. wc don't blame the people of Newport for sup porting the measure, but we do think the News dismays a lot of hewers, Sail. The people of .ewport nad fa right to vote just as they saw tit, and we bercve t lie people in L. C. SMITH WRITES Editor: We all want better roads, and might it be possible, now that the smoke of battle has cleared away to suggest that we go de liberately about it to lay out a road program for perhaps ths next five or ten years tor Lln- coki County. It seems to the writer that if precinct meeting were held and delegates sent to a County con vention each holding votes in accordance with the number of voters in the precinct, that we might get a solid basis for a road bond issue. It might be well before going into the busi ness to agree to leave disputed points to some higher tribunal, n(tav such us tue ouue iiiguwiiy ium mission. L. C. Smith.
