Mrs. M. G. Shernier and daughters, Gretchen and Eollne, left on the excursion Sunday to meet her husband, who has been working in the Philomath logging camp and to visit her sister Mrs. Eva Follett. Mrs. T. Brown and four chil dren returned Monday from Ari zona, where she took her daugh ter, Julia, in hopeB of improving her health. Julia will not re turn this winter, as the change is doing her so much good. Mrs. Peter Shernier and son, Leo visited relatives and friends in Oyster City. Sunday. RIVERSIDE The Dig Elk Fair was a suc cess from every point of view In spite of the poor season a very choice selection of exhibits of all kinds of produce were to be seen. Much credit Is due Mr. Thomason for his untiring work In behalf of the fair. C. A. Brown has recently pur chased some goats from Chas. Arthur, to aid in clearing his land. Nearly all the schools on Big Elk are how in session for the years work. Miss Vesta Folmsbee Is spend ing a few weeks on Big Elk visit lag home folks. j Mr. Washburn is home after pending several months work ing in Eastern Oregon. 1 Mr. Gilson expects to leave Big Elk in the near future. We are sorry to see so many people moving away. Word from J. L. Fisher states that he and family are now liv ing on their place near Browns ville. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Grant re cently spent a week at Riverside and vicinity. Mr. Grant was saw ing wood while Mrs. Grant vis ited with her sister, Mrs. J. h. Daniel. viu,e on his way to the fan, Mr. Scarth had the misfortune of having one of his horses take sick. He waa near Mr. Over lander's place and spent the night there. The horse was better in the morning and able ,to go home. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stewart were visitors at the home of J. R. Daniel recently. ! In a recent issue of the Lea der. we note that Big Elk has a good road. We wish the man who has found it would please come up and show It to us who live here. I iCOLUMBUS STRONG ACCIDENTALLY KILLED ' Columbus Sirong was instant Jy killed last Saturday while roll ing timber tor the Elk Citv Lum ber Co., near Rocky Bar. He with Otto Ho',aate had just sawed the tree off, and in railing it struck a small snag. The top was jerk ed off the snag and fell on Strong crushing his skull. The remains were brought to Toledo and 'shipped to Newport on the even, .ing train. Strong was 59 years oi age, was a widower, and leaves two sons to mourn his iloss. He formerly worked in the j Miller Logging Camps, and had ; worked for Hawkins Bros, but 1 lie one day. He came here rrom Ostrander, Washington. BANQUET WELL ATTENDED The banquet given by the Em broidery Clubs 10 the departing Boldier boys Tuesday evening was well attended, the hall beiiy Tilled to capacity. Several able speeches were made by Newport and Toledo people, songs were sung, and a nhort program was rendered. The departing sol diers with their near relatives were seated at the tabic of hon or, while the audience was serv ed cafeteria style. Arter supper the Honor Guards gave a dance which was enjoyed by a large number. Quite a number were up from Newport for the occas sion. The boys entrained Wed nesday morning for American Lake under Captain Marlon Siiirdevant. JACK BURNHAM WRECKED CROSSING YAQUINA BAR Last Monday evening at about six o'clock, the gas schooner, Jack Burnham was wrecked oft the North Jetty on a sand spit while trying to cross over and enter the bay. As the boat went aground the waves broke over her and tore the hatch off the engine room, disabling the en cinfiH and also wrecking the stearing gear and filline the boat which settled on the bottom. The cargo of general merchan dise is a total loss.- After several attempts the hull was floated by bcowb and ropes, to shoal water north of the port dock at New port.
