LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER, FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 28th, 1917. C. B. CROSNO ON THE s:::a,coo road eond Toledo, Oregon, Sept. 24th, 1917. Votars of Lincoln. County, By your petition, we have a Special Election on October 2nd to vote cn ourselves and our Children SL'00,000 Bonds to be paid with Interest by us and our posterity within the next twenty years, we hove to tax ourselves to nay the expense of this spec lal Election, so we urge every voter in the County Male and Fe male go to the Election and ex press your choice for or against the bon is, lot the majority rule, let everybody come out and show the world that Lincoln County Is not filled with Slackers. This whole proposition has originated with B. r. Joi.es. He has con ducted it. you r..ight rkv, alone. leaving nothing to the County Court, who are our financial agent?. Hut, in hi-, petitions that you are to vot upon, he names the particular :":rl and amount to be expended m curb division Everyone in Uft County knows Ben Is an attorney and shrewd politician, but no one knows him as a civil enliKr, or that he has surveyed or estimated the distance or cost of grading ot any of the.se roads, so you must vote for or against, this large In debtedness on guesswork. In the "News" of September 6th Ben has an article headed "Port land, Oregon to San Francisco By Auto," in which he tries to enlighten the voters to the ne cessity of tins Bond Issue, and by carfiully reading the piece, one is impressed that he is alone with his good roads, as he uses the capital "I", 23 times and leaves the good pronoun, "We' entirely out. His engineering estimates is p'.r mile, grading 5150.00: nails ST.'.OO; lumber $1605.00; totfi.l sir.oo nor mile. does not give width of planking, or length of time expected to last, white Mr. Iljrsfall, who most cf von know, after giving the number of feet to the mile, gives a road bed of 8 feet (which is useless), lumber to cost $2376 or one 13 feet wide to cost $5068 per mile, say nothing lor the suryeying, lnca'ing and grading of Bald roads. You see, it seems very much g'.ie.s work. So Mr. and Mrs. Voter, it is up to you to say by your vote if you desire to load the present nnd future taxpayer down with this bij debt on mere guess work, especially at this critical ti' ie when every thing is so hiidi. our beloved boys b"irg railed away, with Congress, pas'inir a war tax measure for us to help pay to maintain those boys. It would be nice ' From 1'rnland to San Francisco bv Ai ;o" if you had business in 'Frisco, bi t if we must be loaded with bonds, upon sttch construction. Mr. Editor, we do not believe the real purpose of the Bonding Proposition is to benefit the rancher. It's tainted with more or less speculation in lots and town site1 ideas than the dear people. At a meeting held at Ona 14th August, the road question was talked over thoroughly and with out a dissenting voice. It was thought that if we were to vote bonds that a road should be con structed from Waldport to To ledo. Mr. Ohmart volunteered the Information that he was strong for the Toledo way and pledged his supnort. (For fur ther proof see the report of the meeting in issue of the Leader of Aug. 31.) Now. that the Ona Road Club seeni3 to lead the im pression by appearing in each issue that there Is no opnosltion to the present plans. The so called Club is composed of 11 members. 3 of those members have told the writer that they wont support the Bonds as now proposed. If a vote of the people comes out the Bonds in this Beaver Precinct will be beaten 3 to 1 we think. Isn't it about time the tax payers were coming to their bet ter judgement. This is the 3rd special election the taxpayers have been put to within the year all at the behest of the dictator, Mr. Jones. This means some thing like $3,500 expense, should fhave been all done at one time. this an utter loss to the tax rid den public. Wake up tax pay ers! See where you'r at! Read Mr. Clark's letter last week. Figure where our Indebtedness Is reaching to. Do not let Mr. Jones make you believe butter fat will double up because of road construction. Tillamook didn't vote road bonds to reach her zenith. She didn't need a dictator. She had no use1 for some one to advise her what to do. To bond her present, her future, her posterity to mortgage her every effort for ages to come. The world is full of castle builders get rich quick men. If you only listen to them. Al though they themselves never set much of a blaze going. L. M. Commons. at best, and when made of two- inch stuff, isn't even that. All along the Siletz Biver H gravel in abundance, which -in be put on the road with modern meth ods, (not at Mr. Jones' estimated finished road, viz; $1665), but can be made for less money than Mr. Jones' mile of plank road will actually cost. As I will show before I close, his "estimates" are only very poor guesses. Mr. Jones, in his pre-election speeches, claims that he met at these various places 95 per cent of the people and that they were all In favor of his suggested roads. Now, as a matter of fact, at this Toledo meeting, there were only nine. I was one of them, and of the others, none has said he was strong for the proposition. Really n-i-n-e (9 people is not 95 per cent of the people in Toledo's two precincts. If Mr. Jones' other assertion are as wide of the fact, and I believe they are, then you have gotten the right angle to measure his road proposition by. . In his Toledo speech. Mr. , Jones said that he had used all j available means to "inform him- self as to the cost of construc tion, etc." Is this a fact? Last i winter the county court had the I road surveyed from Old Life j Saving Station to Lutgens.
