STATE HIGHWAY COMMIS- . SION WILLING TO HELP US A letter from the State High way Commission was received last evening by the County Court, in which the Commission states that they are willing to heln us on a road project in this county, and agree to match dol lar for dollar any sum up to tne sum of $200,000 which the coun ty officials desire to set aside under the provisions as provided bv jaw a:nl rules and regulations c-f the State Highway Cr.vv.'." sic.il for the handling of such funds. In talking with local Court of f icials this morning, they expres sed themselves as much pleased with the expression of the High way Commission, but very much doubted as to whether the $200, 000 to be voted upon next Tues day could be set aside for the use of the Highway Commission, as the petition asking for the election designated where and how the $200,000 should be spent. It is evident however that the State Highway Commission is willing to heln us overe here, and In case the election fails to car ry next Tuesday, we would ad vocate the calling of another election to vote road bonds to the sum of $200,000 to be placed unreservedly in the hands of the Commission for spending In this county, providing that they will spend dollar for dollar, thus making $400,000 available for permanent road construction In this county. Then again the Highway Commission, undoubtedly has road machinery which could be used to advantage on our roads, HUGH MURRAY WRITES Sept. 27th, '17. Editor Leader: . Dear Sir: I wish to thank you for giving space to the able article by A. B. Clark. Lucky for our Coun ty that we have citizens able to write so sensibly. Clark's stat ment is unanswerable. The anonymous writer, con cealed in the bushes, fails to jar loose the well-rivited joints of Mr. Clark's argument. Yes: the unceasing succession of bond issues will lake another cow yearly from our small herds. Our tax rental, now, takes our best cow every year in some cases her calf also. A rotting plank road that re quires repairs the day after it is laid is a sink-hole to swamp us in bondage. And every bond must be paid (principal and interest) or our lanls be taken as the forfeit. Most of those who advocate bonds have an IMMEDIATE ' SALE FOR Comfy bungalow, modem, op. to-date plumbing and electric light fixtures. Built-in kitchen features and buffet. JONES WRITES Newport, Oregon, September 24, 1917. Kindly allow me a little space to say to . Mr. Ilorsfall, of Nortons, that I think him unfair in his attack on the proposed good road proposition, in this, that he does not offer any argu ment against the proposition, but simply misquotes me in any thing I have said or written on the subject. He says we all want 120 miles of permanent roads if we can get it for $200,000. Then he says it will cost $400,000. He bases his estimates of costs on four Inch lumber, whereas I based my estimates on 2 inch lumber, unless the State' High way Commission co-cperates with the County in building the proposed roads. He bases his estimates on smoothing the FOR SALE roads ready for planking at Jmnn npr miln-whlln T thnnpht hus saving us greatly in the cost that the avCraSe mile of road bed oi eiiuipiueuu we j now in use could be smoothed neea gooa roaas, ana we wouiu 2 Holstein cows 2 Jerseys 35 to $75 good milkers. 1 saddle.
