Wincoln fonntp VOLuME 25 TOLEDO, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 15th, 1917 NUMBER 17 NEWPORT Rev. George T. Pratt, Elmer Patrick and their families re turned Saturday from a ten dayi camping trip down the coast to ( Yachats and Ten Mile. Barring the rain they had a most excel lent time, roaming In the wild woods of that famous hunting and fishing ground. Ten Mile Is a beautiful stream, rushing, ripl lng, splashing down the moun tain side to mingle its waters with the peaceful Pacific. Along this stream is one of the best fishing places on the Coast. The party caught all the fish they could use and supplied them with sport to their hearts con tent. The settlers in this river nave good homes and fine stock ranches and are kind anrl hnanlt able to the stranger and make mm reel at nome. Yachats Is al so one of Oregon's most beauti ful streams coming from Mary's Peak where it heads, winding along through the gorges and bottom lands like a silver thread till It empties into the Pacific at Ocean View. This la one of the most beautiful spots in Oregon. Back in these mountains was the great hunting grounds of the Indians in ages gone by. Here on these hills and vallies the elk and deer roamed by the thous ands. Here it was the Indian ( hunter pursued the, "panting deer and elk and gazed upon the same moon that smiles for us", and here he paddled his light canoe along these green shores chanting his love songs and list, enlng to the roar of the sea-lion as he sunned himself upon the rocks undisturbed by anyone not even the white man, who seems to delight in killing all the game, fowls ana animals that were created to make this - world - beautiful. The Great Spirit must have been grieved when he saw his beautiful crea- . tures ruthlessly killed in this way. The Indian is more provi dent than the white man. He only kills Just what he needs. Here at the mouth of this river, the shell beds have been built eight or ten feet high. 1 1 must have taken ages to do this. In these beds many interesting cur. ios and relics are found. Great rocks and cliffs line the oceai; shore at U1I3 place and as the great swells roll In and break upon these rocks, the spray of ten rises fifty or sixty feet high, and as the rays of the sun shines through it. it elves the seven col ors of the rainbow making a most beautiful picture. Mr. Pratt said they had a fine time, all enjoying it to the fullest ex tent. Sunday evening at the Pres byterian Church a Red Cross Chapter was organized by Dr. W. T. Johnson, chairman of the Corvallis Chapter of the Ameri can Red Cross and E. E. Wilson vice-president of the Corvallis Chapter. Mr. Wilson made a very interesting talk on the im portance of the organization. The purpose Is to raise money to furnish supplies, medicines, bandages, delicacies, etc, for the sick and wounded soldiers that will occur in this world war. Rev. Geo. T. Pratt was elected president, Elmer Patrick and Mayor Walrad were elected first and second vice-presidents res pectively; Mrs. Dave Harding, secretary and Chauncey Haw kins, treasurer, and an execu tive board of ten members were also elected as follows: E. C. Burton, Mrs. Irvln, Mrs. Thomas Leese, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Kirk land, Mrs. Armltage, Wm. Wag ner, Earnest Ewlng, Mrs. Chas. Gardner, S. G. Irvln and Dr. Car ter. Mrs. Callahan, secretary of the Chapter at Corvallis, and her sister, Mrs. Huston were pres ent and made sueeestons to aid In organizing.
