NEWPORT SCHOOLS
Newport, Or., Mar. 18, 1917.
Editor Leader; I have hesitated to
request space in your valuable paper
for further discusgion of Newport High
School affairs, but the Intelligent class
of our citizens does not deBire the im
pression to go out 'hrough the county
that they are to be Judged by the ego
tistical school-girl effusion that ap
peared in your last issue, under the
pseudonym of "Student."
' The slur thrown at Toledo's excel
lent High-School system in that article,
as a fair sample of the liberal at
titude of this would be censor of the
public press. There are unfortunately
in every community a few narrow
minded and misguided individuals
who think it an evidence of their own
superiority, to belittle the citizens and
fnBtitutlpns of adjoining towns, but
we bespeak for "Student" our chari
table .Indulgence. She is quite young,
and the very young always are .in
fluenced by surroudtng environments.
For two years Blie has been imbibing
learning at the feet, of whom to her
unprejudiced (?) mind, can only bo
spoken of aB "Superintendent - and
Principal ln Chief of the Newport Hifh
School System."
She reminds us somewhat of little
Yankee Doodle who "Mounted bis
pony, stuck a feather in his anatomy
and called him 'Mkcaronl,' " when
she gushingly compares the miserable
condition of High School affairs of
two years to its present efficient con
dition, and gives all the praise to said
"Superintendent." We vender what
her opinion will be two ycarB hence,
for Idealistic youth is proverbially
ac.
The facts about the present con
troversy here are simply as follows;
' Newport School has a registered at
tendance of less than 250 pupils. Supt.
Coin is our authority 'for the state
ment that the State Board of Examin
ers have ruled that no school with less
than 400 pupils can eltx:t a Superlu- '
teudent. I
The official Blue Book for 1916 lists
Prof. Oilman, us Principal c' Newport i
High f-Vhool. Vet Student s.v-s that
he is a "Superintendent," ami thr.t I
Prof. Gcnn Is the Principal.
Either the State Board Is wrong, i
the Blue Book is wrong, or
Student
needs another two years study ii,
English before she again airs her er
udition. The plaint of tlip taxpayers of thli
school district Is that our Sthoo!
f Hoard is baying a l'rincli.al a Super
intendents snbry, when we cannot
legally
employ a Superintendent.
Plenty of efficient men enn bo secured
as Principal, at a salary of $1000.00
the same as you pay at Toledo. This
' alone would bo a snvlng of $1530.00
;per year. Our Board is now admitting
tlat jt cun diSI)cnce with several
j,. . ......, i..i..i ,i ni
achers without Impairing the ellc
' i'0' of the schools. It is the present
waste of the taxpayers money that we
ura complaining of and
Student" is
not the only one who was "astounded"
when the true factn ln tills ccu'ro
versy bet ami l imwii. For example,
Newport lilch, with 47 pupils, Is pay
ing Prof. Ortman, Principal, 1 5:10.110.
Iloseburg, with :;00 pupils, pays lier
principal 135.09 less. Ho'l River,
222 pupils, pays $405.00 lens, etc.. etc.
Dozens of similar comparisons to our
1 1
.disadvantage can be seen In tho Blue
Book by those who care to further in
vestigate the nintter. "Student"
(luotcs a lot of figures In her article,
but her figures compare Prof. Ortmun's
salary here as Principal (for he legally
Is nothing else) with that of the salary
paid Superintendents In other cities,
and Is therefore about as pertinent to
the question, as though she were to
dub her Idol as "President," nnd com
pare his salary with that of President
Kerr, of O. A. C or President Camp
1 bell, of U. of O,
We ch illenge the School Board,
"Student", or the so-called "Superin
tendent" to produce any record In the
school iiiiuuli's Unit mention Ortuuiu's
election as a Superintendent. On the
o'.hur hand I am Informed by reliubh
authority that It was specifically stat
ed In such minutes that he was elected
as Prim Ipnl.
Hence the uller absurdity of "Kind-
ent's" entire article, and tho ronlm-
! lions of the School Hoard Is patent to
all). onPi ,, ,,,,, H(, ,,.titl nmt t.v, n
a wnyfalrlng sludcnt should not err
therein.
The taxpayers of this dlsrtct are
trusting that whet, tlie chuh of
teachers and salaries are mailt) for
tho coming year by the Bimi'd, they
will govern tliemsi Ives by tlin rules
of tho State Board, and use the same
diligence In handling our school uf
fairs that they excrclso in their pri
vate hunlnesi.
Wo certainly have a. right to demand
rtbnt much
We further suggest that
"Student" be given another two years
courso In "Klcmentary lessons of
Ihigllsh," and tho "Science of Fig
ures," before setting out to reform
vngnrlcs of hor own brain.
"Not A Student."

one man to tell another about W-B CUT Chewing,
so he, too, may enjoy the contentment there is in
rich, sappy tobacco and also avoid so much chewing
and spitting.
The common-sense of it appeals to people with
brains. There's no getting 'round facts, W-B will save
a man money a little chew lasts and satisfies. A 10c.
pouch goes twice as far as ten cents' worth of the old
ordinary kind of chewing.
