AKIN, Toledo, Oregon HERE ARE TWO LETTERS Last v.-cek County Judge Mil ler wrote to Mr. S. Benson re garding the arranging of a meet ing with delegates from this county, and the answer he re ceived is not very satisfactory to say the least. We reproduce both letters herewith ; Toledo, Or., March 13, 1917. Mr. S. Benson, (State Highway Com mission) Portland, Oreg, Dear Sir: Wc are very much interested In the matter of good roads. We have no ticed that our County was not in cluded with those mentioned to be benefitted by this $6,000,000 bond is sue. At the meeting at Eugene last Saturday, we were told that we could still be recognized and that authority to include us was with you. We were also told that you would come over and meet the people here with the idea of making a satisfactory adjust ment This was all we could ask and was perfectly satisfactory to our dele gation. I would like to arrange a meeting of representative men from the various parts of the County to meet you here. If it is agreeable to you, and you will set some date con venient for yourself, I will call the people together. Assuring you of our appreciation of any Interest you may take In us, wo 'are, Yours truly, R. R. Miller, County Judge. Oregon StMe Highway Commission, Salem, March 10th. l!tl". Hon. It. It. Miller, County Judge, Toledo, Oregon, Dear Sir: Your favor of the thirteenth at hand and contents noted. In regard to the present road program as out lined by the Legislature will gay that the most heavily travelled roads of the 'State only are Included, but you will note that the Legislative Act gives the State Highway Commission authority as to the distribution of the funds, and I assure you that every section of the Stute will get some attention before we finish. The pressure brought to bear from the populous centers along our trunk lines will no doubt bo so great that these trunk lines wi:i have to receive our first attention, but tho sooner we get those roads improved and out of the way, the souner we will get to the lateral roads. It Is to be Imped th.'t tho present bond Issue will carry as the money Troni same will luUb ewe of the trunk Tines pretty well tine will leave the other funds to be distributed through the State, - although, even In that case It will be Impossible to reach all tho places In one or two yours. I Like for gran'ed tli.it the road to Corviillis will be your main outlet and it should huve first attention. There should also be a road fr-un Tillamook down the Coast, but just how soon this can be undertaken is hard to say. I can not at tho present time make any definite promise as to when the Com mission can do something for you. but you can rest assured that you will not be forgotten. I understand that the road from Cor 'vallls Is passable In the Summer time and as soon as the weather permits I hope to take a trip down your way by machine. Yours very truly, 8. Benson, Chairman State Hlj-.hway Coniiiilsnlon. DOES NOT AGREE WITH C. M. DRAKE Slletz, Ore., Mar. 20th, 1917. Editor of the Leader: I read your letter from C. M. Drake. Mark Twain said never to argus with mules', women or fools but I don't want you to think all your readers agree with Mr. Drake. Once upon a time a goat tried to bunt a locomotive off the track. Pub lic opinion Is moving against German Intrigue just as that locomotive moved against time. Mr. Lane's stand can be compared with the goat's. I agree that It took courage to make that stand but I don't admire the judgment. Mr. Lane thought an antl-Wllson state was anti-U. S. The people of the U. S. and of Ore. in particular are not tak ing sailing directions from der Kaiser or from the gentleman from Wis., the stronghold of hyphenated American citizens. Mr. Chamberlain has been in public life for some time and he seems to have escaped the ivory hunters so far. Friend Drake, like a great majority of Oregonlans I am not pro Wilson nor pro ally but in any controversy where our rights and honor as a na tion are concerned I am pro United States this time and all the time.
