LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15th, 1916. MITTY'S ARTICLE ,; CONVERTS WALDPORTER WrJdport, Oregon, Dec. 14, 1916. Dear Editor, In the last Issue of the Leader I saw an article that caused me to be very much peeved. I ob ject to being called a parasite. Of course the shaft was directed at me along with all the other residents of Lincoln County but then the force of the blow is again contracted when the gen tleman from Marion County tells us that we comprise les3' than one-fourth of the taxpayers of the county. Webster says that a louse is a parasite. Swift des cribes the enormous lice . he found in Brobdingnag as animals something like pigs and having snouts with which they rooted o'ji- the budlc3 of those who wei Infested with them. Let us define Mr. Mitty's re lation to Lincoln County. Un less he is an exception of which there are few, he is one who owrn property here which he hopes.to be fib!e to sell at a prof it when we fifteen per cent have developed the county. Of course he Is perfectly willing for the fifteen per cent (the parasites, If yon please) to build roads by donation, ford streams or pay ferry fees, build schoo'.houses, make other improvements and otherwise enhance the value of his land at no cost to him.. I would never be so ungentle mar'y as to apply any but an honorable appelation to the gen tleman from Salem who hopes to receive a gain as the result of the teborq of us parasites. But never fear, my friend, we'll make you dig to get it. You will find thut our r!:in is thick. I Jo not duny that much tax county can nut raise clover or corn and can't ship their hogs or caiue to tne market unless we have a county agent, i ' , . Now I have seen more than a dozen car loads of cattle and some hogs and sheep that has been shipped out of this part of th'e-county this fall. . Of course now, if we have an agent Mr. Severson and a, great many others would have said it is be cause we had an agent. Now I would like to ask Mr. Severson why didn't he stay in Lane county if the agent would have made him rich. Mr. Severson also said that if Mr. Clark had had an agent .he would not have had to go to Uncle Sam for a job. Now I can remember just but a few years ago that Mr. Sever son was out for a job from Uncle Sam himself. Mr. Severfcon also said he would like to know if Mr. Tan gen is getting all out of his land that there is to be had out Rld of fern. I think which is a shor thing that I am but know how tn get a little more if we only had a market. So When mv rrnn Jo In full bloom next summer I would gladly welcome Mr. Severson j and his friend Web to m nut and see for there self. Mr. Severson alsn onlrl if n.o had an aeent to show ua hnr tn raise more and better crops we ' woma ie more able to pay ouri taxes but he didn't stop to think that we can not sell half we raise now. Web seeing to think experience is the dearest. While ic distresses me to take issue with Web I firmly believe he is mistaken. But where Uoea a agricultuv nore the mass of struggling ranchers and farmers and help me iewr Long arter Mr. Mitty's timber has been removed, and lone after all the vireln timber of the world is gone, agriculture win stni provide for the earth's peoples. Which is the greatest industry? ... Who and what is a parasite ' The man who lives in his com munity, pays his taxes and tries to develop his county's resources or the man who holds specula tive property, 'does not reside near it, waits , for the pioneers, homesteaders, road builders, farmers and other citizens to develop his property, and then yells bloody murder if he is re quested to nav more taxes than he thinks necessary? Mr. Mitty speaks insultingly of the way our olllcfals handle his (?) affairs. lieallv. I chrtulri think he would reside here, that he might help to elect more ef ficient and desirable men, in stead of giving lone distance ad vice. He says that non-resident tax payers uid their frlei ds tell hor rible talet. about extravagance. wastefulness, etc., such as we practice, and that It reallv is det rimental to the growth of our countv. These talen are nlrcii- lated through business and so cial conversations by some, but he himself seems to prefer the newspaper. We thank him verv klndlv for this timely and, withal, senten tious warning. As soon as we awaken from our famous Rip Van Winkle snooze such as I have complained of in past let ters, we shall positively recall our poor, ignorant, meechine officials and choke down the taxes to not more than 1 'A mills, T w h - , : ,;hpph in , uul VWlCre uoe3 H agricultur. taxes to not more than lU. mills, oncvery-ranch l,-.(i..n rntv,''. some iooiisniy, ij.. , , , ,,.. . i ki ii ironi experience. son.c carelessly and some even Web i - criminally; but it gives me a ent anDr0DrlSaMnn Jnt ?:J?TZ they can be until the farnu maice more money but he didn't state nothing about the present appropriation being not large cou'.i continually knocked by those who cinnot give any B'iLiresiior.s as how the court;' af.Urs can be managed better. H Is easy enough to criticize even if we cannot do any better ourselves. Give me a sledge and I rn soon ruin the finest piece of statuary man ever made. Any baby can try for milk but it takes a man to provide the wherewith to buy the fluid at ten ctnts per quart. Tlii only encouragement that Mr. Mittv" gives any farmer to settle in "Lincoln County is the Etnteuent that "not any prop el ty of those engaged in agri cultural pursuits were adver tised to be sold by the sheriff." The iecs I say In reply to this the mnie favorable it appears for Lincoln County. Ilerctofor I have not been en enough to get an agent with. He talks a3 thoiieh the an irlll make the roads and money while tne rarmers are waiting. . Mr. Severson and Web also talks as though the farmers will get some thing out of nothing. It also seemed to have hurt Web felling considerable that Carl Insinuates he was a moss back and wants every thing for himself and also because Carl failed to give him t little credit for boosting that he had tucked away. If Mr. Severson Web and such partys are determined to employ a county agent why not employ one to operate a few industries In the countv an at the rnimiv expense Bticn as paper mills log in the countv. and lust, but not least, we won't forget that agri cultural agent. It Is verv easv for a mnn to shout calamity and write advise. What we really need is someone to neip ao trings, instead of knocking with a hammer. Web. I be lieve that I can give a few rea Esna why Lincoln County is ,wore In need of a county agent thRn our neighbor Polk. 1st Polk is nearer the markets and the need for organization and co-operation is not so great. 2nd Our lack of proper trans portation facilities makes or ganlzatlon , and cooperation irore necessary.
