need of a Normal Echool In Eastern
Oregon Ib readily proved by the most
cursory Invcs'Jgat'on cl ;::o Hat of cur
itudonts and the 1'itt of our gra-iuate
tcachors. Tho estimated population
of pur state In 1914 was 790.S87. Take
for example the eight Western Oregon
oountios, Clatsop, Clackamas, Benton,
Lane, Linn, Marlon, I'olk and Yamhill
Counties. Their population for 1314
waa 214.(08, or less than 27 per cent
of the total .population of the atato,
yet (0 per cent of the graduates from
our Normal School for the past five
yearn are teaching school In soma one
of these eight Wostern Oregon coun
ties. There are 25 counties In the
state, yet alght of theae counties are
getting, halt ot. the benefit of the
teacher for which all of the counties
pay the taxes. a
Her Is the Hat During the pait
five year we hare supplied the ful
lowing graduates as teachers to then
counties:
Clatsop, II; Clackamas, 20; Ben
ton, 26: Lane, 26; Linn, 2; Marion,
22: Polk. 25; and Yamhill. 20. In
other words, 20 of our 407 teachers
who have scoured places I if the publie
schools In Oregon during the past flva
years, have gone to these eight Wil
lamette Valley counties.
Now take eight typical Eastern Ore
gon count'es and soe If they have se
cured their proper sham of teachers
with Norn il tralnln;. During tho past
five years we hare supplied Normal
graduates a follows to these Eastern
Oregon counties:
Baker, I: Grant, 1; Harney. 4; Mal
heur. 2; Mor.-.-w, 4: Umatilla, 10;
Wallowa, 7; and WhwW. 3.
The eight Willamette Valley coun
ties had 202 Normal teachers as
against II Normal teachers for the
eight Ekutern Oregon counties. East
era Oregon recelred less than 10 per
cent as against Western Oregon's fifty
ft cant,
