O RAGS, copper, brass and Junk ot an kinds wanted at the Sec ond Hand Store, Toledo, Or. day for Mayatlan, Mexico On our way down we had j orders to stop and take a look for refugees in Turtle Bay. We anchored some few miles out and lowered a motor sailing launch and twelve of us well armed were detailed for the trip around the Jagged shores to a point inside. Entering the bay there Is but one narrow passage between the mainland and some giant rocks with breakers on both sides. We entered all O. K., had our look around with the disappointment of finding only a rew Japanese that had been ship wrecked and had taken to fish ing and turtle catching for the market. We had the misfortune of having the motor break down and had to row part way back. It was very dark that evening and the ship had to flash her search lights about the bay so as to give us light enough to see the narrow channel that would let us out of the dangerous bay. lOettlng back O. K. we lifted an chor and continued on our jour ney. Lying off Mayatlan 30 miles for 10 days, we sailed south to Manzanlllo, Mex., arriv ing the 7th of July and relieving the U. S. S. Pittsburg of her duty there. At the above place we men of the ship stood gun and search light watches, playing the search light every ten Beconds. That Is one thing we are always ready for action and never let the en emy get more than the first shot before we are hot on their trail. These watches have con- j tinued and will till we sail for the States once more. leaving Manzanlllo, Aug. 5. we arrived at Acapulco on the Gth where we received 300 tons of coal off the U. S. R. Brutus. After coaling we took on board more provisions to last us some time. The U. S. ships, Colorado and San Diego were in this port wnn us, u. s. ship Ran Diego leaving Aug. 13th and the U. S. S. Colorado, the 14th of Aug., also later In the day at 5:15 P. M. we left for Salena Cruz where we will relieve the U. S. S. Chat tanooga. We, the U. S. 8. Mary land, do not know where we will go from there but we all hope she will go north to the States. There has been no lib erty given the crew since June 20th, 1916 so you see we all would like to go north where liberty will be given. Be true blue to your colors every man. The Hughes Alliance origi nated in New Tork as a state organization in 1908 when Mr. Hughes was governor. It was the instrumentality in the state through which many men did practical and effective work for his re-election, and did it with out distinction or difference based on their accustomed polit ical affiliations. Under the lead ership of staunch friends of Gov ernor Hughes and In full co-op eration with party and other or ganizations working to the same end, the Hughes Alliance enlist ed and made effective the con crete political efforts of men and women who gladly accepted this kind of opportunity to do some thing to continue the Hughes standard of public administra tion in state affairs. The work of the Alliance was a striking demonstration of the way in which, at a time of crisis, ordi nary party differences may be subordinated and the indepen dent sentiment of the state made politically effective.
