native chief of Yap, which la one of
the Caroline islands lying southeast of
the Philippines, may be seen a row of
"money atones," tbe current coin of
the island. In slinpe these Rtones are
like millstones, but they ilo no grind

the wealth of the village. Their value

they are obtained.

After pacifying the king of Palao with

peculiarity of nine and Its multiples by
applying It in tbe following way:
If nine la to be multiplied by v eight,
for example, think at once of seven

be added to seven to make nine, and
yon have seventy two. the product of
"nine and eight
Or. If nine la to be multiplied by Ave
think of four, which la oue less than
Ave; then think of five, which must
