This receipt will be given on the payment of me cent additional postage on the parcel. Hitherto parcels valued at $23 and under could be insured for 5 cents. The new ruling makes a 3-cent rate for parcels valued at less than $5. John M, Scott, General Passenger Agent, Portland, Oregon rrom $50 to $100 parcels. The present rate is 10 cents insur ance for parcels valued between $25 and $50, and this rate holds. Parcels from $50 to $100 in value may be insured for 25 cents un der the new ruling. Certain Oregon and Washing ton postoffices are within the first and second zone when dis tance from Portland is counted as the crow flies. But the mall route is so roundabout that mail must go more than 300 miles to reach them. Under the new rul ing these places must be counted j ad if they were in the third sons land third zone rates paid on par I eels. This means that the rata is increased from 5 cents for the j first pound and one cent for each additional pound, to 6 cents j for the first pound and 2 cents I for each additional pound. Ten ! pound parens would thus cost 1 24 cents postage against the for mer 14 cents. Larger parcels have been ad mitted ever since July 10, wbun a new ruling went into effect. The old limit of added length and girth of parcels, 72 inches, was extended by thLi ruling to 84 inches. Crates of eggs and boxes of apples are admitted un the new limit. 0 NOON TRAIN TAKEN OFF NEW SCHEDULES After next Monday the noon train will not be operated. Ben was a printer and newspaper publisher then one of six in all of North America ! Today there are more-than 25,000 newspa pers in the United States, and new ones are appearing dally. The mother of the future Mrs. Franklin was evidently neither an optimist nor a prophet. 4 u THE KNOCKER VS. THE BOOSTER The Knocker When the Cre ator made all good things, there was still more work to do, so He made the beasts and reptiles and poisonous insects and when he had finished he had some scraps that were too bad to put into the rattlesnake, the hyena, the scor pion or the skunk, so he put these together, covered it with suspicion, wrapped it in Jealousy, marked it with a yellow streak and called it a k-n-o-c-k-e-r. The Booster This product was so fearful thaC he had to make something to counteract it, so he took a sunbeam and put in the heart of a child, and the W. L. Hall, brain of a man. and than Assessor or Lincoln County, Or. .'wrapped these In civic pride, cov ered it with brotherly love, gave it a mask of velvet, and a grasp of steel, made it a lover of fields and flowers and manly sports, a believer In equality and justice and called it a b-o-o-s-t-e-r. 0 Shoes!
