Irvln Magee is having some a few days with her brother, Ed! Willie ClauBius bf Slletz was la CLEAN UP; fAINT UP
This has been a busy time for
Newport. The public school is
closing up Its work for the year.
"The Merry Milkmaids," a' play
put on at the Midway Theatre
on the evening of the 14th by
the Eighth Grade pupils was one
of the best entertainments of
the season. The Class was un
der the direction and training of
Miss Harkleroad. The play rep
resented the beauty and happt
' ness'of farm life. The girls,
with their plain calico dresses,
sun bonnets and milk buckets
and stools to sit on while milk
ing, and at the same time keep
ing cheerful and happy. ' In this
country where it rains so much
in Winter the boys and men do
the milking as well as to do the
farm work. The boys came on
the stage with their farm clothes
and farm utensils for work
hoes, spades, shovels and axes.
These boys .were also happy,,
showing Ihey were well pleased
with their chosen A occupation.
If more people owned their
homes and as much land as they
need there would be less pov
erty and suffering in the world.
Stay on the farm Is good advice.
The lllgh School gave an en
tertainment in the auditorium of
the new ' building. The stage
was beautifully decorated with
evergreens. The exercises were
begun by a vocnl solo by Miss
Harkleroad. Salutatory by Mr.
Fred Roylton. Class Prophesy
by Walter Belt Valedictory by
Madaline Ryan. The High
School graduates showed by the
able manner with which they de
livered these addresses that they
had been trained in their school
work, especially In clear ex
pression and forceable delivery.
Miss Ryan s address made a
. good impression. The graduat
ing address by W. E. Gwynn, in
, bis usual able and eloquent man
ner. His address rose to the
dignity of an oration. Prof.
Dawkins also made a very plain,
sensible talk to the Class and if
remembered will do each one
great good in all their future
lives.
