On Friday six young ladies- 1 teachers came from Eugene hy way of Siuslaw to Newport, leaving Florence Thursday, ar riving at Newport Friday even ing. They came to Mapelton by rail then to Florence by water. Oa way the coast they stopped at night at farm houses, They spoke of having a most excellent time a holiday from , start to finish. Their names are Misses Mary H, Perkins, Freida Goldsmith, Marjory L. L. Hipburn, Harriet W. Thomp son, Henrietta Smith and Dr. Bertha Stewart " The Doctor was the chaperon of the party. These ladies registered at The Abbey and started on the next morning ' their way home. ! They sopke in the highest terms of the grandure and beauty of j the scenery as they came along both by land and sea. A large party came from Yaqulna and other parts of the county, among them we noticed Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Pruett, Mrs. L. E. Casteel and daughter, Edith, and a number of the C. & E. boys, also John Dailey from Rock Creek. The hall Is large and commodious and the floor the best In the county. The order is always the very best and as the dances close at midnight no one gets tired out. When dances are co ducted this way it Is a pleasure to dance and it is also healthful and instructive. The Club now has over 200 members and is in creasing right along. The Gerald C. and Patsy came In Sunday with freight (or New port. The Patsy passed out over the bar Sunday evening bound for Siuslaw and other points south. Robert Collins, one of the editors and publishers of the Lincoln County Leader was In Newport Saturday, having come down on the gasoline launch Transit. Mr. Collins noted with pleasure the many improve ments going on in Newport, es pecially of the street improve ments and road building now go ing on, and particularly the neat appearance of the comer on Front street, where onee the Reception saloon was kept, but now occupied by the fine grocery rnd dry g-.(.! i stores kept by II. D. Morse. At the Commercial Club meet ing Monday evening the mattor of selecting a sulUiblo place for the County Fair ground? came up for discussion. The com mittee that had been appointed a week before to make some ar rangement with the people to purchase 24 lots belonging to D. S. Young and Mr. Blckford, lo- cated on Cape street, a half mile from the I. 0. 0. F. hall. This plot of land was very good abay, L. C. Smith and Lee Wll liams. Died At her home in New port, Oregon, April 20th, 1915,1 Miss Maude Merle Kirkpatrick, aged 17 years, 5 months and 14 days. The funeral services , were conducted at the home by Rev. George E. Pratt. The in- tprrmont took u In cemetery. The floral offerines were the most fragrant and beautiful that could be found at this season of the year, when na I ture is adorned with her most gorgeous colors. In the morn I ing of youth, when life's Jour ney had lust commenced, sur- rounded by father, brothers and sisters, with a smile unon her face as though she saw and was greeting some lamiliar friend, she passed over to the beautiful city where there is no sickness, .sorrow, pain nor death. She was a member of the Christian 1 Church and a young lady of fine ! Christian character, devoting her time, when able In trying She at to get an education tended the public school and was loved by all her school mates. A large number of friends and neighbors attended the funeral, six young men of the High School acting as pall bearers. She is survived by her father, three sisters and broth ers. o Elk City B. J. Chapman, wife and little daughters, who have been vis iting A. B. Slocum and family, returned (b their home near Philomath. Miss Bessie Gillet spent a few days visiting her parents, near Corvallis. Mr. Pearce taught during her absence. Deputy County Assessor F. W. Chambers was tailing on the homesteaders of Beaver and Bear creeks last Saturday, stop ping at John Gwyn's. Mr. Chapman and wife, A. B. Slocum and wife were guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Thompson last Sunday, giving them a little surprise by coming over the trail. Thev returned home hvi launch Monday. Bear Creek Is planning on giv ing an entertainment soon. Everybody get your purse ready. Very enjoyable times are be ing had at Bear Creek school- house every Tuesday evening, practicing singing. o Upper Beaver Tete Peterson and Jesse Clif ford mado a trip to Oysterville Friday. K. D. Commons returned home from Portland Wed nesday evening. While there he visited his son, Lloyd, who is rap idly improving and has a wheel chair now. We hope to have n,m among us again in the near future. Mrs. II. H. Edwards and sons, Kenneth and Clarence, were vis itors at the Hill ranch Saturday. Mrs. Ralph Darting visited Mrs. Mentor Randall, who, with her family, are moving from Harlan to their stock ranch on the Drift Creek trail. Chas. Llndley Is working at Racks creek. The road gang Is making plans for their Summer's work. Several of the Racks Creek and Sweet Home representatives will make Sura Thine- rnn.h their headquarters. Ryan makes regular trips now hauling cream. Friday is his day. o Little Elk Goat shearing is over; mohair sold, and money all spent, and now we are looking for some thing else to do. Mr. Crocker is building j some new fence. j Kenneth Loudon made a flying trip to Turn Turn last Monday. He went to the blacksmith shop to have some repair work done. The Little Elk ball team met and defeated the Eddyville team I on the Eddyville diamond last Sunday. The score stood 19 to 6 in favor of Little Elk. It was j only a five inning game but the boys will have a game with Mc- ' Gee's bridge crew next Sunday, This promises to be a very fast game This will be the second game. While going home from the ball game last Sunday S. T. Lou don and family had what might have been a serious accident. They were driving a young horse and in some way he got scared at something and started to run and came in contact with a telephone pole. All four traces broke and there was such a sud den stop that all were thrown out, spring seats and all, but aside from a few small bruises there were no one hurt. Mr. Loudon says Old Pet is fast enough for him now. The Eddyville mohair pool was sold last Monday. Anr 1 19th There were 22,283 pounds In the pool. Jesse Farln left Monday for Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver have gone home, after spending two weeks camping at Taft. Road work has shut down for a while. Mrs. Horner has been visiting at Mrs. Stone's on Schooner creek for a week. Almond Bones Is hauling milk to McCllntock'8 cheese factory. Jake Johnson had the mlsfor tunetune to lose a fine colt last week. Charley Hyde has been on Sal mon River this week surveying Mr. Winkler's place. Adams and daugh ter were Newport visitors Mon day, to have some dental work done. Oysterville has been quite lib eral with their whooping cough as they have divided it up with some of our people. The Dowl ing family are whooping it up. The school board met Tues day evening and decided to hire Mr. Fischer for another term. Mrs. T. Dowling and Mrs. J. Weston were Toledo callers Tuesday. The house of Sid Nickleson caught fire Saturday afternoon, but prompt work soon ex tinguished it and no harm done. o Winant Times are dull and news is scarce, so here goes. i Jay Van Scholck surprised this vicinity by getting married last Sunday, April 18th. He and bride left Wednesday morning for places unknown. We all wish them a pleasant honey moon trip and a long and happy married life. 1 Quite a few people of Yaquina attended the dance given at Newport Saturday night. Selby's, on account of Mrs. Selby's illness. G. W. Stephens had the mis fortune to lose one of his good milch cows. Mr. and Mrs. S. R. We understand that Austin Rosebrook, the musician, has se cured a position In an orchestra in Portland and will soon leave for that place. Mrs. Altree will soon start a restaurant In the building now occupied by Henry Lewis. Mr. Lewis will move his goods Into the postodlce building and Post master Burt will move the ofilce into the McDougal building. F. Dudley Carson of Minne apolis Is on his way to Oregon and will locate In Toledo to prac tice law. County Treasurer Denllnger informs us there will be a large fruit crop this year.
