J-' MtUW - mtmm nil I m . VOLUME 23 " . " TOLEDO, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRIL 9th, 1915. NUMBErT" tlfI TlTTV MFhAC News of each Community Gathered each , , yUy i?l I I : ll u YVy, wefek by Our Rustling Associate Editors ' .1, Newport Col. E. Ilofer of Salem came over Friday to spend a week at lxla Agate Beach cottage for rest and recreation. ' While here he will put in an early garden for .the benefit of his family, who will come later. ' ' 1 W. P. Keady and M. G. Nease of Portland come over to spent a few days at the seashore and to enjoy a dish of Yaqulna bay's fine native oysters. Mr. Nease made a proposition to the Coun ty Court to cruise the timber of Lincoln county, ' also to make a photographic map of the coun ty at a cost of twelve and one lialf cents per acre or a total cost of $40,000 or $50,000 to the county. This would be unwise at this time. The county is still In debt and the times are dull and many are not able to pay their taxes. The timber owners are now paying sixty per cent of the taxes and 8 re making no f U3S about it. The timber sales and the lumber markets are dull and it is no time now to add to the burden of taxation. Besides Jf the timber is cruised it will go on record and it may not be sat isfactory and result in expensive litigation to the taxpayers as It has done in other counties. ' The Tillamook, Capt. Johnson with freight for Newport, Sius law and Bandon, was in port. ' The Tillamook nd Patsy will make regular trips on this run duiiug the Summer. These boats will carry passengers. A ' schedule of dates of arrival and departure will soon be published, We will soon have a splendid ocean service. The Mlrene and Ahwaneda will still continue their regular trips. 4 At the' last meeting of the Commercial Club M. S. Wood cock proposed a set of resolu tions asking the Club to take up the matter of trying to induce the S. P. management to extend the Corvallis & Eastern railroad to Newport. On motion of Thomas Leese, seconded by R. A. Bensell, the resolution was adopted. On motion of S. G. Irvin the following-named per sons were appointed as a com mittee to formulate a plan to present to the railroad company, S. G. Irvin, Thomas Leese, A. L. Thomas, Elmer Patrick and M. S. Woodcock. The proposition was so hastily brought before the Club and bo quickly disposed of that the people did not have time to think the matter over, but afterwards a good many more signed the petition. Mr. Irvin, P. A. Bensell, M. S. Wood cock and others made speeches In favor of the extension. The most important thing in the res olutions was to have the road extended to Newport, and the In centive offered was the twenty five cents fare each way to the :-. railroad company Instead of to ; the boat company. The length "-' of time this money was to bo paid was not stated and the ac ' Uon the state railroad commis sion might take on the matter "was not discussed. The regular fare is three cents a mile. To allow more than that might con flict with the law. It would be a nice thing to have the road ex tended both for Newport and the general public. The company can expend the road if It .so de sires, even if It don't get the tweuty-five cents. The contract to finish the grad ing of Case street road was let to Mr. Crowder. When the grading Is done the road will be planked. Newport goes right along with her Improvements notwithstanding the hard times, At the Council meeting last night the occupation tax ordi nance was passed, all the coun cllmen voting for it except one, A resolution was also unani mously passed asking the Coun cil to appropriate $250 out of this fund to aid in entertaining the grand lodge of I.
