Wincoln 's3 VOLUME 22 TOLEDO, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30th, 1914. NE21SEP. 37 COUNTY Nqvs of each Community Gathered each week by Our Hustling Associate Editors NEWS Newport The Flfleld went out over the bar Sunday evening at high tide. She had a cargo of 600,000 feet of lumber and was bound (or San Pedro. The Ollie 8. towed her out without any trouble, notwithstanding that It Is more diffi cult to handle the Flfleld than the Bandon. The Tillamook left Monday evening with 1600 cases of salmon bound for Astoria. The Ahwaneda Is In Portland after a cargo of freight and will return In a few days. The Mirene came in Monday with a full cargo of freight for Newport, Yaqulna, Toledo and Waldport. The water transporta tion is increasing right along to the great advantage of the pooplo. Since the storm we are having exceptionally good weather. The temperature is about 65. The sun shines, tho days art warm, tho nights are cool, no front. The birds are singing and tho flowers are blooming as in springtime. New port Is as good a winter resort as a summer rasort. We have np duct or northwest winds in winter to make it unplcaRunt. The travel Is good and man. iuvulids and people out of health nro coming to spend the winter litre. Building and Blreet Improvements r.ro Coins riuht a!ou;. Sixth r.nd Angle street" in the vicinity cf tlio public school building nro b?ins graded and put In nplct'.dld condition. Tho proper ty owners r.ie dolus the work the rliy only fixing the oimrcs. Ti:ln pU n woiks better than It did when the City made the street luiorovtiiienM. Then contracts v.'tia let aau a l:.ri?o portion of tlio money :''uand-iod. When peoplo do their own wu.-k they are very careful nnd no nicucy in wasted. I think this p.)Iicy would work as well in the county Improve me nts. The people are tired and sick of hixh ta:x'3 ami bonded !ndjttedne33 either lu city or county. The best mads in the county cro ocing built by tho people ihetmielvcs. The greatest Improvement for Newport and Lincoln county Is to Improve her water ways and deepen the channel on the bar. The Government says in order to do this tho people must pay half the cost of tlio improvements. The Toledo peo ple did a little better than this. The people there put up CO end tho govern ment 40 per cent to pay for the im provements they etready have. Wo here must do our share if we over ex pect to g'.t any help from Uncle Sam. We can by petition extend our port district and take in more territory, and then levy a tax sufficient to do our part of the work. We can take in all th" watershed that flows to tho ocean. That would Seclude the terri tory lying south of a line running eant from the mouth of tho Silett river to the summit ofa the Coast range of mountains. All streams and creeks on the werl of the Coast rango run to the sea. It Is up to the Commercial Club and the people to have this work done. I have no doubt the timber men will be in favor of this for they are very antlous to get their timber sawed up and shipped. All that vast body of timber on the Snetz has fully matured and is now In Die process of docay. The only way they can ship it with pn;!lt is by water. It is needless to say that this would benefit Lincoln county. D. II. Robinson, tho Alaska miner and poet, delivered a speech at. the midway theatre Tuesday evening to a small audience, on tho prohibitatlon amendment from a liberal standpoint. He five red a vet town and regulated saloon. Paid if you make Oregon dry you will kill one of the great industries of the state, throw thousnnds of men out of employment and oho deprive the stale of $900,000 annually. Mr. Robinson Is a fair Bpcaker and he must hnve been dry himself because he drank a pitcher of water whllo de livering his address.
