RUMBERsT" CC TNTV NPAQ cws ()f cach Community Gathered each" tlli I h week by Our Rustling Associate Editors- Newport Sunday was a live day in our city for candidates. Henry Howell and O. B. McCluskey are candidates tor re eloctlon on the Republican ticket. Tbo former for Clerk and the latter tor Treasurer. 0. V. Hurt, who is a candidate on the Republican ticket for Commissioner, and Robert Miller can didate for County Judge on the Re publican ticket, and Judge' Fogarty, present Incumbent, and candidate for of County Judge, on the Democratic illcket, were in town. As were bIbo Derrick, the veteran County Surveyor, . candidate on the Democratic ticket again for re-election without opposi tion, and Superintendent R. P. Ooin were also visitors. Messrs. Goln, Howell and McCluskey were on their way home after attending a grange picnic at Rose Lodge. At the picnic were' other candidates. Mrs. George Echenck, candidate on the Democratic ticket tor Clerk, and Cbes Morrison, Democratic candidate for Sheriff. These gentlemen speak in the highest terms of the kindness and hospltllity ot the people of that community. The dinner was the kind rural neighbor hood always prepares. The tables literally groaned beneath a load of good things. About 200 persons par took of the feast and enjoyed It to the fullest extent. A neighborhood fair was held at the same time, having on display a great varioty of the produc tions of that part of tire county. It was all very good ana reflected credit on those who produced it. A very in teresting program was rendered and a number of speeches were made and some songs were sung. A number of the candidates made short talks. Road Master Beezley and James Der rick have just completed surveying and locating the road on the north aide of Beaver creek from Ona to the beach, a distance of four miles, at the cost of about $1,000 per mile. This Is an important piece ot road and will open the way for the people of that auction to market their products. By good judgment and economic manage ment the good roads question can be easily settled. We don't want any bonding or a great outlay of money. On the Big Elk the people have built some of the best roads in the county. This was done mainly by taxing them selves. This is also true of the road on the Yachats. There the people have bnilt five miles of road through the worst creek bottom and have grav eled it and now It Is ona ot the best pieces of road in the county. The people did it by taxing themselves. The county has about 28 road super visors and they get 92.60 per day. I don't see why these supervisors with Uie aid of the county surveyor cannot Dandle the roads of the county with out the aid of a roaoj master. It pays to practice economy. The Awaneda cama in Sunday with a full cargo of freight, bringing two boilers, one for the heating plant of the High School and the other for the aawmill at Toledo. The body of Miss Jean St-armun, who was drowned in the 81uslaw river September 20th, will be brought to .
