Does Prohibi tion Fulfill Its Promises? Thinking people of every religious creed and political be.,ef should give earnest htod to the expressions of opinion from eminent di vines, educators, editors, governors, judges, legisla tors, and others prominent in. every walk of life, who have publicly voiced their bti.timents concerning pro hibition in words similar to these: ...... "Prohibition drives under ground the mischief which it seeks to cure, making it r"n difficult to deal with the evil and impossible to reirulate the trado." Uishop Hall, Vermont "Prohibition ha3 been dis astrous to the cause of tem perance." l'.iahop Clark, Rhode Island. Thone men are sincere and conscientious. They dcploro drunkenness and cry against it as a great evil. Who, in deed, does not! Yet they know from observation and experience, that prohibition docs not put a check upon intemperance but that, on the contrary, it gives rise to evils even greater than intemperance itself. Convicts Dry 4 to 1 to Prisoners Beg State Vote Out Saloons 332 X YESTHEIR PLEA EIGHTY-SEVEN AND ONE-HALF PER CENT OF CONVICTS ARE IN JAIL AS RESULT OF LIQUOR. Convicts at the Penitentiary at Sa lem have voted dry four to one. Two hundred and thirty-five favor the Oregon dry amendment, No 332 X Yes. Only 53 voted wet The poll was taken for the Com mittee of One Hundred by a life-term prisoner, engaged by Probation Of ficer Snodgrass. The men were told the records would be kept secret they were to exercise their prefer ence!. The vote at the Penitentiary is a dramatic plea to the state at large for the passage of the Oregon dry amendment. Official records show that 87 per cent of the convict are at Salem as a result of saloons. The vote at Salem is even more em phatic than that at a Pennsylvania Penitentiary, where a large majority asked the state to vote dry. THESE ARE MEN REALLY FIGHTING AGAINST ORE GON DRY. An interesting sidelight on the real barkers of the fight against the Ore gon dry movement, which is now sweeping the whole of Oregon, is seen in the suit filed by Fred R. Bowio against the brewery and liquor cor porations of Oregon. Bowie was engaged to handle the publicity fight for the wet interests and their various organizations under all manner of titles. His contract was canceled and the other day in Portland he filed suit There are the people he sued: American Brewing & Crystal Ico Company, of Baker; Northern Pacific Brewing Company, of Astoria; North' 1 ern Ilrcwing Company, Salem Brew. Ing Association, Portland Brewing Company, Rothschild Bros., Olympia ' Beer Agency, W. J. Van Schuyver & Co., F. Zimmerman & Co., Henry Florkenstoin & Co., Gombrlnus Brew. ! Ing Company, H. Vnrwig and Sol Blumaurr. Through the Influence of Jim Lari.ln, the European strike trader, the strikers decided to drink no alcoholic beverages.
