India monkeys are regarded as objects of worship. One of the principal monkey temples Is at Nuddua. Such veneration is shown tliero to Huulinau, the monkey god, that visitors uiny not enter the court of the temple without removing their shoes. On ono occasion an English officer. In passing up the country iuar Nmt Jea, elm need to stroll Into a bamboo Jungle when his boat had "put to" for the night. He had not advanced far before bo heard a terrific uproar nil About him, and be was not a Utile alarmed to behold a whole army of the largest monkeys be hud ever seeu making toward him from all quarters. Some Jumped on the ground before blm, others swuug by tho bamboos over bis head, nnd many closed up the path lu bis rear. Several females bad' young ones clinging to them, but this fact did not seem to renler them less agile than the others. The Englishman knew not what to do. He yelled at the top of his voice for assistance. To his Intense relief, each time that he yelled the monkeys retreated a bit This encouraged htm to persevere in his shouting, but ho observed that when he himself began to retreat the monkeys would again begin to close In upon blm. Then he stood still nnd gave one tremendous shout, whereat the mon keys went back again. This time the ninn bad gained fully twenty yards and wns nbout to repent the tail when there appeared a new figure upon the scene In tho person of nn nged, de crepit woman hobbling through the midst of the nnlmnls. This nged person shook two or three of the monkeys by the paws as she pnsnod. No sooner had she come with. In bearing of the flrlllslier than site opened nnou blm the vials of her wrath for disturbing tho sacred ani mals In their retirement. She bade the Intruder depart, and that quickly, on order which be lost no time in execut lng. The monkeys alt seemed implicit ly to obey tho old woman's blildlns, making way for the man's retreat. The old woman, It appeared, wn employed by the Tlrahmans to supply the monkeys with their food each day. They were worshiped by all tho peo ple In the country round, who brought offerings of rice nnd sweetmeats to them continually. Harper's Wpckly. Furniture of Quality O. R. A maiden well advnnred In years used to wait every morning for the postman, a bachelor of about ber age, aud ask blm If there wus not a letter for her. ( Several weeks passed thus, but the nnxloiiHly expected letter did not arrive, Finally one morning tho postmnn said to her. "Well, tomorrow yon shall get ynnr letter, If I have to write it myself." "That's right; do It," replied the old tnnld. "I shall be delighted to ac cept It." "Well,'' said the postmnn, smiling, "what do you want me to wrlto business letter or a love letter?"
