Alexander Sweek, a promi nent attorney of Portland and the chairman of the Democratic state central committee, is spending a week at Newport a guest at the Abbfy. Mr. Sweek was appointed minister to Siam. at a eatery of $10,000 a year but the appointment was not confirmed by the Senate. Mr. Sweak is still an applicant and hopes to be confirmed before Con gress adjourns. Mr. and Mrs. X. K. Weatheerford spent Sunday at Newport, hunting agates a part of the day. The late storms of January washed the beach clean of sand from Cape Foulweather to Alsea bay, a thing that has not occurred before in the history of this country. Persons familiar with the beach when the sand is on would not know it now. Nothing but the bare rocks and agate beds meet your view as you go along. Many valuable testes have been found this Winter. The northwest winds of Soring and Summer will Eoon put the sand back again. Now is the time to hunt agates. Rev. Wm. Parsons, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Eugene, is holding a series of meetings at the Presbyterian church. The meetings will last for two weeks. Services will be held every evening at 7:30, except Saturdays. Mr. Parsons is a very able and interesting speaker and no doubt much good will be accomplished by these meetings. "' The tug Printer of Grays Harbor came in over the bar on the 6th and went back with the Porter Bros barge, Frederick, for Port land where the barge will be put on dry dock for repairs. The residents of the Black school district met on the 9th at the schoolhouse. which they rebhingled and put a fence around the grounds. At noon they went to the home of R R. Black where the ladies had prepared a bountiful dinner to which all did full justice. They expect to have school in that dis trict March 1st. R. L. Hathaway was a Corvallis vistior lat week. P. H. Martin has gons to Hood River. George Titus is confined to his bed with a severe attack of rheu matism. Miss Etta Jordan, who taught in the Black district a year ago, is quarantined at Monmouth, where she was attending the State Nor mal, as there was a case of small pox dcveloveped in the house where she was rooming, Miss Pcrcival, who ia teaching the Drift Creek sahool, vieited on Big Elk Saturday and Sunday. John Hanlon was a Linville visit or Saturday. John Olaon returned from Toledo Thursday. Ole Olson had the misfortune last Friday night to Jose the horse he bought from Fred Creighton last Fall. John Gienger came Friday from Beaver Creek to see the horse. Mr. Gienger has had considerable experience with horses and Mr. Olson was in hopes he might tell him what ailed the animal, but the horse had been sick about two weeks and died an hour after Mr. Giergsr arrived. Funeral services were conducted by Henry Hend rickson of Bay View. Milton Hendrickson came up from Bay View Sunday with George Gienger who he is isiting this week.
