If on n screen of black velvet placed t n distance of leu feet from the spec tator larfee letters ure posted, some blue, some red. they will uot appeur to be ut au cipml distance from the eves. To souiu persous t!ie red letters will fieem nenrer timii bliie letters, while to other persons Uje contrary effect Will bf manifested. 'J'o prtidure ililn effect both eyes must be employed. When one eye Is closed the letters are all seen nt the mime dis tance. On opening the other eye one net of tellers Immediately appears to take a position iu advance of the others. The explanation offered for this effect is that a Kurt of stereoscopic Illusion is prodined in the eye itself, depending upon color. The image of a blue object Is shifted by the eye toward one side and that of a red object toward the other side. If on looking at blue nnd red letters on n black background placed ten or twelve feet awny you see the red letters nearer than the blue, screen off one half of the pupil of each eye on the outside and you will see the red let ters retire behind the blue one3. If you screen the pupils on the side toward the uose you will see the red letters advance apparently still farther nbead of the blue ones. If, on the other hand, you naturally see the blue In advance screen the In ner side of the pupils of your eyes and the red will come to the front. Beautiful effects are produced with one eye alone when, instead of letters', red or blue rings are pnsled on n back ground of the opposite color. Placing red rluss on blue paper nnd using the right eye with the inner side of the pu Jill covered the appearance Is that of circular red hillocks resting on a blue ground. To produce this effect In Its highest degree the paper must be held to the left nnd sloping ' In that direction. When the outer side of the pupil Is screened the red rings will become cir cular trenches ln4uo blue paper. New i'ork Sun. . NOTICE OF PROPOSED STREET IMPROVEMENT. The Fair is Here Today is the last day of the an nual Lincoln County Fair. The weather every day has been ideal, and the attendance has been good, yesterday being the biggest dav in point of attendance and it is ex pected that today will be even- greater. The exhibits in number are about as at the previous fairs, and in quality, in many instances, much belter than ever before. The stock sheds were not nearly full, but the qualitv of the tscck is good. We haven't time nor space in this isjue to make anything like a complete write up of thing3 in general, which we will attempt to do as soon as the premium books are made up and are accessible. The school exhibits are simply grand. Much of the work done bv the little folks is ahead of anything mcst of the grown-ups could do. Hard work, deep study and patience is shown throughout the exhibits, and the young people who con tributed to these exhibits are to be congratulated on their efforts. The State Fair should have these exhib-: lis, and we are sure some of Lin coln county's boys and girls would carry awav some of the grand frizes offered. . I Newport Dav (Wednesday) was' generously patronized by the citi zens of our sister city. Fully 400 people from the Resort City . spent the day here. ! Yesterday was Siletz Day and we believe Siletz was almost totally ; deserted by the number of her citi j zens that were here. The "bird men." Edward Steele and N. H. Richards, gave an exhibition, and all had an opportunity to see a "fly-' irg machine" in the air. j During every afternoon there has' teen horse, races, and some good.! speedy horses were there. j In the ball games each afternoon there was entertainment for all. ! The Siletz team proved the best at 1 every game. This afternoon foot-: ball between Newport and Toledo will be the game. This pr cmises ! to be extra good. j In the fish booth are on display seme miehty fine fish. Among1 them is a 133 pound sturgeon, ex hibied by Ole Amundson of this place, and a whopper of a halibut, exhibited by the Ollie S. The merry-2c-rour.d. the shows. ! the nigger babies and other attrac tions supplied the fun. The officials ' and committees arc all doing every-' thing to make the Fair a success ! nnd show all visitors a good time, ! and we believe they are doing it. ' Married At Newport. Monday.! Or., a nine-year old boy carried off a total of . 31 prizes, winning first on' practically all lines of fruits and vegetables, and also took first money in the chicken display. Among the other items shown by this youthful farmer was a box of 12 pounds of American Wonder potatoes, the product of one lone spud. troupe gave a "Wild West Indian Show" at Woodmen Hall last even ing for the entertainment of Fair visitors. There were about a dozen performers all dressed in native costume who furnished an exhibi tion of the Indian dances and songs. Among the dances given were the Sun -Dance, Bear Dance, Rogue River War Dance, Medicine Man Dance, FeatherDance and several others of which we have forgotten the names. The preformance was good but the attendance was light hardly enough to pay expenses.
