The 01 lie S. and Fish are engaged
in taking people out over the bar
on fishing excurions. This is great
snort for the tourists who come
here for health and pleasure. At
times the boat goes out eighteen
or twenty miles where the fishing
is good. Ulten one person will
catch five or six fine lin or rock cod
and frequently catch; fine, large
halibuts. The people frequently
get seasick, but they don't mind
that as the fun of fishing and rid
ing on the waves offset any trouble
they may have in this line. This
fishing business is one of the at
tractions that is growing in favor
all the time. Some five or Bix of
the smaller gasoline launches are
engaged in the deep sea fishing
right along. Now that we have
cold storage it is easy to keep the
fish, and all fish that cannot be sold
in the Newport market can be disturbed by the invasion of several

Hon. John M in to of Salem is now
slopping at the Ocean House. Mr.
Minto came to Oregon in 1844 and
has lived in the state since that
time. He is now 91 years old and
is quite active and well preserved
for a man of his age. Mr. Minto
was a member of the commission
appointed by the governor to re
ceive the first twenty miles of the
0. P. railroad; At that time he
with the other members of the

inspected and received the road,

port to spend a week's vacation.
He was accompanied by his brother
in law, chairman of the state game
and fish commission Mr. Carter
went out over the bar on the Fish
and had good luck in catching eight
or ten lin and rock cod. This, he
says, is fine sport.
Another source of sport
amusement especially for
and.
tne
young peuple is catching torn
'cod
with hook and line in the bay. For
the past week some 25 row boats
have been out on the bay for these
fish. These are splendid fish and it
is a luxury to eat them.
Last Sunday was a red-letter day

from Newport through Lincoln is
good, but when you get over into
Benton it is rough, rocky and bad.
