I Marten Woods of Linn county is camping with his family, at the YachatB. ! Joseph Patterson of Newport was among the passengers on the Ollie S. Joe has many friends in this end of the county who are always glad to see him. The Mirene arrived with cannery supplies and freight the 5th. Just a few deer killed at the' opening of the season, as the hot weather and the flies keep the deer in the brush. Work is progressing nicely on the Cape road. George Furneaux is building r house at San Marine, eight miles south of Wadlport on the ocean beacb. An oil well at Waldport is not improbable in the near future as strong indications of oil have been found and pronounced Jy Govern ment experts as the real article. Harlan Mr. and Mrs. Tunison of Corval lis, former residents of Harlan, visited friends here recently. They drove through from Corval'is to Elk City. . . Our valley is almost depopulated this week, as so many have gone to Toledo to attend the January trial. Miss Freeman, who has been visiting the family of Isaac Bois . returned to her home Sunday. A party was given at theB. F. Grant residence Saturday evening, in honor of their Quest. Mis-s Ida Hur'ey. Everyone reported a very enjoyable time. Haying is about over in this vi cinity and people are preparing for threshing. " G. E. Darting, who has been building a store for Mr. Pruner at Summit, has come to assist his sen on his homestead. Dr. Paulee, Frank Mulvaney. R. Hathawav, Mr. Bois and several others left on a hunting trip Sun day morning J J tb?,g Fred Kinney left on the 4th for California to look for a location. Mr and Mrs. Davidson of Peak accompanied Chas Lillard to Toledo ounaay. Dell Hedges traded his Jersey cow to R. R. Black for a young horse. Bert Wood, an uncle of the Gor ton children, came in from hi3 home in Washington to visit them. He stayed four days. The Gorton children's cousin came to visit them last week. Mrs. Amo Bone, is visiting her son, Walter, here this week. The cannery is running and there are lots of fish and plenty of fisher men. Mrs. Wm. Scott returned home last week C. H. Hernstreet is camped at Taft and with his launch, Idtewild, is ready to cross teams over the cay. Mr. Crisler does not return with his new boat. Wonder why. The Hotel Messner at Taft is full to the utmost lately. The sawmill owned by D. R. Ring is running full time and turn ing out lots of lumber. Frank Murray is hauling lumber from the D. R. Ring sawmill. Frank is building a fine new barn. The Farmele sons are still haying. They will have nearly 175 tons in their barn when all i in. The land is washed away in front of Dodson's store at Taft clear to the logs and it is still washinc nnH filling in on the south side of the bay. Mr. and Mrs. John Bones have been catching some fine trout if late. Chauncey Gilrnore' brother in law is moving into the Uonchev hnnsp land will work at the sawmill. Linville Chitwood The C. & E. railroad company has just completed a wagon bridge across the cut at the Wm.fcfteinmetz place. The road will now be changed to the north side of the . track, thus doing away with two dangerous railway crossings. The bridge will be an outlet for Mr. bteinmetz. Mrs. Ella Baxter arrived last week -from Montana, where she has been teaching in an Indian school. f E. A. Wildman left for Poitland Wednesday to attend the Goldman Reis debate. He will stop at Gas ton on his way back and visit for a while with his father. - Last Thursday while on his way . from Toledo to Newberg, "W. W. Hollingsworth had the misfortune to strip the low gear on his auto. He brought the car to Chitwood and shipped it on the- train Friday. Kernville. Carrie and Dan iel Wheelock caught a rice string of trout Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Huntsucker visited Mr. Wheelocks Sunday. In the afternoon they took Mr. Whc cl ock's motor boat and went down the creek as far as C. H. Miller's. Mr. Huntsucker purchased two ton of hay of W. H. Simmons. Mr. and Mr. John Olson went to the bay Sunday. Peter Peterson, who is carrying mail for Frank Huntsucker, visited Christian Olson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Goin, Gret chen Baldwin and Hallie Glines of Waldport were up the Creek Friday evening.. Miss lone Glinos returned home with them. Mr. nd Mr. C. H. Miller were up to Mr. Wheelock's one day last week. Carrie Whetlock returned Home with them and stayed few days. Three of our local snorts went nunting the first, but the bucks were all poor so they left them to fatten up a little. At least that wa the story they told when they got back. Dr. J. F. " Turner and wife of Canton, South Dakota arrived Tues day evening to make a two weeks' visit with Mrs. Turner's mother Mrs. C. G. Copeland. Dr. Turner was at one time physician at the Si letz reservation. He was also super intendent or the Indian insane asylum the only institution of the kind in the world at Canton S. D. The Misses Lottie and Lulu Mont gomery of Redmond, Eastern Ore gon are on a visit with their aunt, Mrs. J. H. Blair. These young ladies are both teachers and come here to spend their Summer vaca tion. A good many Eastern Oregon teachers come here to spend theii vacation because of the thorough change of climate, fare, and gener al surroundings which always prove beneficial to their health. The Newport Band is at the boat landing every evening ana niuys tor the amusement and pleasure of the people. Newport, besides her beautiful and health ful surroundings, has many other attractions that are being appreci ated more and more as time goes cn. On Saturday a large sea lion came ashore just a little south 'of the Patrick warehouse. It spp-s Hp j had been wounded and had crawled out on the beach to sun himself. He would weight about 800 pounds He. was killed by Sume of the bovs and his skin taken off and sold. The hid-, weighed 80 pounds and brought 20c. a pound. The carcas was used for crab bait and the skeleton could have been old for $40 to the O.A.C. had it been kept. James T. Plant formerly of Min neapolis, is building a four room cottage on the bluff above the Ab bey Hotel. This is a beautiful lo. cation overlooking the bav and ocean and a large extent of the sur rounding country. Mr. F an be lieves the elevated places, because of the view and the surrounding conditions, will be more sought for by the people who wish ta build than will the lower grounds. In a short time Mr. Plant will build a large apartment house near his cottage. He has great faith in Newport and is willing to invest his money. A great many cottages are being built in Newport this year. Philomath, the Victors The ball came Sunday i-ncuHo in a 13 to 15 victory for Philomath. Both teams played very ragged ball which accounts for the large score. Andy Goodell knocked a home run in the first inning, scoring two runs, and Carson got a three bagger in the sixth. ThH is a suit for dam ages wherein Mrs. Graham is suinjc the railroad company for $25,000 for injuries received in a wreck near Chitwood last November. There are several witnesess in the case and it will probably take all day. and perhaps longer to com plete the examinations, and the arguments will take up considerable of the time tomorrow. There are several other cases yet to be tried and Court will probably remain in session all this week. We will give the complete results in our next issue.
