Fire Destroys
Old Courthouse
Saturday morning the livery barn
belonging to Gust Olson at the cor
ner of Hill and Fifth streets burned
to the gronud with all its contents,
with the excerjtion of the hems
which ware gotten out.
The fire was discovered at about
half past four by both A. L. Jacob
son, who lives near the barn, and
Grant Hart, the watchman at the
sawmill. Mr. Jacobson at opce
rushed over and liberated the horEcs
and drove them out, while Mr.
Hart gave the alarm, by blowing
the mill whistle, and also made pre
jarativ'ps to protect the lumber
piles and the mill from the fire.
Members of the fire department
responded at once to the alarm, but
the building was aflame from end
to end, it being only thirty minutes
from the time the fire was dis
covered until the walls fell in, so
tbey directed their efforts to saving
adjoining buildings.
The efficiency of the fire depart
ment and Toledo's new water sys
tem was superbly demonstrated as
the adjoining buildings are very
close and were afire again and
acain. but throucA the untirine
efforts of the fire fighters the loss
waa confined to the one building
and its contents.
This building was built about
twenty-hve years ago to be used as
town hall. It was afterwards used
for a number of year3 as the Lin
coln county Courthouse, but for the
last six cr eight years has been used
as a warehouse and the basement
was converted into a livery bam.
The lus3 to Gust Olson on build
ing and contents amounted to
about $2000. Gardner & Peterson,
on hardware stored in the building.
$400; A. T. Peterson, chittim bark
stored in the huildincr. SfiOO: Aus

Corvallis Took
The Honors
Sunday's b'all game, which was
won by Corvallis by a five to six
score, drew the biggest crowd that
has been at the ball park this sea
son. Siietz put up a gcod game
and it looked for a time as though
they would win by a score of five
to three, but Corvallis chased in
two more Ecores in the fifth and
one more in the seventh which
secured them the game. The Si-
