Father Smith's Answer to Ya quina Socialists To the Yaquina Socialist Locals Gentlemen When, at Yaquina I answered the question, "Why the Catholic Church Opposes Scientific Socialism," I only touched upon its MORAL aspect, and this is the only aspect of Scientific Socialism that I care to discuss On this point, therefore, 1 am willing to address your body end fellow citi zens at some convenient time and suitable place, in order to further substantiate the statements hereto fure made by nie; not, however, to 'debate" the correctness of such statements, much less to become involved in an endless and usele controversy about the economic featurts of Scientific Socialism lnis is altogether toreign to my sphere of activity Moreover, should I cctne to Yaquina cn the invitation of your body for above purposes, it would be altogether at my own expense and without anv reimbursement from you. I would; only expect polite, gentlemanly, treatment which 1 am fully confi dent would be accorded me. Respectfully yours (Rev.) Charles M. Smith. Corvallis, Or., July 28, 1913. Sheriff Wilis - ; ; Road Tax Case The case of E. J. Avery vs. Sheriff Geer, as tax collector, in which the plaintiff alleges thht the meeting held in road district 6, for the purpose of voting a special road tax, for the year 1911. was not legally hefd, and asking that-the Sheriff be enjoined from collecting said tax. etc., has been decided in favor of the defendant, and the costs of said action assessed to the plaintiff. The Court hulds that while the meeting may have been irregular in part, the intention of the meeting was to comply with the law, and that the plaintiff cannot, after this length of time, evade the payment of said snecial read tax, by cause of said irregularity. The decision is an imoortant one, inas much, as there has been a large number who have refused to pav their special road tax, pending the decision of the Court. LOST.
