When General Moreau was in Eng

rather droll misunderstanding. He
was present at a concert where a piece

Having a very imperfect knowledge
of English, he fancied it to be a can

he distinguished the words:

Each time the refrain was repeated
he rose to his feet and gracefully
bowed on all sides, to the great aston

"Carina Ye Boo, Ye Brute?"

whether he took "this woman" as his
wedded wife without eliciting a reply.
At last the patience of the bride was

addressed her lord and master, in the

"Canna ye boo, ye brute?"

Romance and reality generally keep

Then there was your old friend
Claude Melnotte, who courted and won

to Keep romance and reality apart,
but eventually the ax dropped on the

The New York case of Miss Thryza
Benson and Montague Flagg the other
day, however, reverses the usual nlot
of the novelist. Mr. Flagg met Miss
Benson at an Innocent house party.
They were mutually attracted Immedi
ately. So Flagg paid ardent court. He
wrote the young; lady and aha wrote
him, he all the while never suspect
ing she was an heiress to "seven fig
ures of fortune." Every once in a while
something would happen that would
all but reveal the secret, but Miss Ben
son would give the "hush" sign and the
subject would be turned. At last Flagg
proposed, was accepted, and the couple
were married: on the weriritne rtnv thn
bridegroom learned "officially" that his
wife was the granddaughter of Robert
Hoe and destined to inherit riches it
would take quite a little while to
count.
A wealthy Milwaukee widow a few
years ago advertised in a matrimonial
paper that she would make a good
wife for the right kind of a man. She
picked out the best photographed man
that answered, and thoueht she'd trv
this novel plan to smoke out the pos
sible fortune hunter. "When they met
she said:
"I have money and at the same time
I haven't. It'll all depend. Don't ask
me any more questions. We'll try it
for six months."
They were married. The bridegroom
proved the most silent kind of a man.
The former widow could hardly get a
word out of him. But he was a deter
mined, steady working, sober chap and
she fell in love with him. At the end
of six months she said to him: "It's
all right You're my man. I've plenty
of money."
But the six months' husband spoke
more volubly than she had ever known
him to before. Said he:
"Nothln doin' nothln' doln Was
Just goln' to tell you nothln' doin'. I've
got money myself. I thought I'd try
you out the same way: The smice

"Possibly you can attend to the
little matter of business I wanted to
see the mayor about"
"I shall be glad to do so, if I can,"
replied Burk.
"Well," continued the woman, open

KEEPING THE LINEN IN ORDER
Well Ordered Closet Is a Joy and With
a Little Care May Easily Be Pro
vided for In Any House.
A well ordered linen closet is a Joy
to every housewife who fortunately
possesses one. The really Ideal linen
closet, of course, is one that is big
enough to have a window; but the
usual line closet is built into some
cranny of the upper hall, in a rather
dark, out-of-the-way corner. This sort
of closet Is, of course, Just as useful as
the larger, airier one, and with a little
attention can be made to look almost
aa welL
Before the week's laundry work is
put away it should be thoroughly aired.
This rule applies to sheets, towels, pil
low slips and table linen, as well as to
clothes. If the day is bright and dry
the freshly-ironed clothes can be
spread on a clothes horse on a sun
shiny plaza, or in an open window. If
the day is damp they should be aired
before a stove, fireplace or radiator.
It is a good plan also to leave the linen
closet door open for an hour or so
every few days, when the windows
throughout the house are open.

SWEETS FOR AFTER DINNER
Three Really Excellent Dessert Dishes
That Are Not Expensive and Take
Short Time tfi Prepare.
Orange Sweet Take a breakfast
cup of sweetened orange Juice and
add to It two tablespoons of good
brandy or sherry (if sherry is used
about three tablespoons) and two
dozen macaroons. Arrange them in
the dish they are to be served In,
pour the mixture over them and let
them stand about , 15 minutes, then
arrange a little rose of stiffly whipped
cream on each.
Albemarle Squares. Cut a square
loaf of cake into thick slices and cut
the latter into squares. Cover with
preserved fruit or Jam, put two to
gether and cover with whipped cream.
Banana Delight . Six bananas
peeled and rubbed through a sieve
with six tablespoons of sugar and a
tablespoon of lemon Juice. Soak and
dissolve half a package of gelatine In
a little milk, and when cool, but not
set, fold in a cup of cream that has
been whipped solid. Mold, and when
chilled serve with whipped cream.
Old-Fashioned Irish Stew.
Take three or four slices of fat
salt pork, cut into little squares. Put
those into an iron kettle and fry over
a slow fire until all the fat Is extract
ed; then take out the scraps, leaving
the fat in the kettle, and into this
place a layer of potatoes, thinly sliced,
then a couple of onions sliced, and
then another of potato and onion, and
so continue until you have perhaps
four layers. Sprinkle salt and a little
black pepper between the layers. Now
lay on the pork scraps, adding Just
enough water so that none will be left
when potatoes and onions are cooked.
When done, or nearly so, take a dozen
Boston crackers, split and lay them
on top, split side up. Now take a
handful of flour and stir it In a pint
of milk, adding a little salt and a lump
of butter (small). Put into the pot
and let boil until the crackers are
soft The whole should be well mixed.
Use JUBt enough milk to give a mois
ture and no more
Canton Stew. '
Put three cups finely shredded cab
bage in enough water to boll, and let
cook slowly until tender, which
should be in about three-quarters of
an hour. When the cabbage has been
cooking half an hour add one cup
milk, and when it is nearly done put
in two cups of milk. Let It boll up
once, then season' with salt and pep
per and pour in a hot dish In which
should be put one teaspoon butter. If
you like oyster crackers served with
milk stew, you can use them with this
soup, which greatly resembles oyster
stew in flavor.
Apple Toast
Quarter six apples, take out the
core, peel and cut each piece in two.
Put a tablespoon of butter in a sauce
pan, add two tablespoons of powdered
sugar to the apples, put them In a
saucepan, adding a very little water;
let them stew quickly, tossing them
to keep from burning. When tender,
cut two or three slices of bread, fry
the bread a delicate brown in hot but
ter. When crisp place on a flat dish,
sprinkle with sugar and cover with
the stewed apple. Serve hot
Orange Tea.

an orange and cut In thin slices; pour
the hot tea directly onto one or two
slices and add loaf sugar. '
Cold Water Cake.
One and one-half cups sugar, one
quarter cup of butter, two and one
half cups of flour, two eggs, one cop

PREYED ON THE DEAD
GREWSOME CALLING FOLLOWED
BY "RESURRECTION I8TS."
In Great Britain Comparatively a Short
Time Ago Surgeons Paid Well for
Bodies Brought Them for
Dissection.
In the days of the Resurrectionists
in Great Britain various means were
devised to prevent the nefarious prac
tice of body-snatching. Recumbent
stones of huge dimensions were fre
quently placed over tombs in lonely
churchyards, while burying places
were often made unapproachable by
the erection of massive railings. The
services of the local blacksmith were
also requisitioned to fasten strong
bars of Iron over the coffins to pre
vent the possibility of the body being
uplifted from its resting place.
In many churchyards watch houses
were erected, at the door of which
after an Interment careful watch and
ward was kept, and not a few tales
were told of mysterious beings sur
prised in the midst of their ghostly
depredations.
In a few places mort safes or dead
houses were constructed in which the
dead bodies were allowed to remain
several weeks or until such length of
time as they were no longer service
able for dissecting purposes. An in
teresting specimen of the above is to
be seen in the quaint churchyard at
the ruined Church of Cowie, near
Stonehaven. This was a favorite
haunt of the Resurrectionists from Ab
erdeen. The corpses were conveyed in dog
carts to the Granite City. With a
view to escape detection the lifeless
figures were clad once more in the
garb of the living and placed on the
conveyance in a sitting posture.
The story is told, says a writer in
the Glasgow News, how on one occa
sion a party of Resurrectionists
stopped at a wayside Inn for refresh
ments, when all partook of the same
at the door of the inn. The innkeep
er, noticing the silent figure of one
of their number left alone in the con
veyance, remarked: "Will yer freend
no' tak' a dram?" Without saying a
word the party instantly mounted and
drove ot, leaving mine host who was
not without his suspicions, to draw
his own conclusions as to the calling
of his visitors.
Injects Liquid That Takes Off Fat.
The latest development In the
physico-chemical treatment of disease
Is the reported discovery of Dr. Max
Kaufmann of Germany, lecturer at the
Halle university, who has subcutane
ously injected patients suffering from
excessive corpulence, and even fatty
heart, with a solution of palladium (a
metal of the platinum group), made
colloidal, or plastic, and utilized in a
parafln solution.
Two Injections weekly, it Is said,
produced a daily loss of two pounds
weight, not only without ill effects,
but with a feeling of pleasant relief.
Palladium acts on the system by chem

Women as "White Wings."
The director of public works, Mr.
Cooke, is going to appoint women in
spectors of street cleaning, not as
he said, to encourage t,he equal suf
frage movement, but for the sake of
efficiency in ferreting out dirt
Cooke believes women inspectors
will be more conscientious than men.
For these tenets he has had practical
demonstrations during his term of of
fice by the employment there of a
young woman who has acted in the
capacity of private inspector for the
director. She Is not on the city pay
roll, and her salary has come from
private sources. Her field covers all
manner of public contracting work.

Have 8clssors Handy.
The habit of reading with a pair of
scissors close at hand is an invaluable
one to the busy housewife. So often
there are recipes, household hints and
other odd bits of information that
would prove useful, but we have lost
account of when or where they are.,
In every kitchen there should be a
scrap book for such items as these,
and the more methodically they are
arranged the more useful they will
be.
Gave Her All Her Rights.
A woman was charged at Greenwich

a donkey to stray, immediately after
a young man had been fined for a
similar offense. Mr. Symmons "You

fine you the same as the man. if I
charged you less you would say you
