Medical Fees In Bygone Days.
At the beginning of the eighteenth
century the usual fees to physicians
and surgeons in England were "to a
graduate in physick, his due Is about
10 shillings, though he commonly ex
pects or demands 20. Those that are
only licensed physicians, their due is
no more that 6 shillings and 8 pence,
though they commonly demand 10
shillings."
"A surgeon's fee Is 12 pence a mile,
be his Journey near or far, 10 groats
to set a bone broken or out of joint,
and for letting blood 1 shilling; the
cutting or amputation on any limb, 5
pounds, but there is no settled fee for
the cure." The system of regulating
the fee according to the pocket of the
patient, remarks the Westminster Ga
zette, -is almost as old as history.

Hedgehogs Milk Cows.
A 6porting incident on a farm at
Uffculme, in Devonshire, England, has
revived the question whether or not
hedgehogs under certain circumstan
ces abstract milk from cows. A farmer
and his friend were shooting rabbits
when their spaniel bustled out of the
hedge with a hedgehog in its mouth.
"Kill the brute," called out the farm
er. "Hedgehogs have been a perfect
pest this year. They have been milk
ing my cows." The dog returned to
the hedge, where It caught five other
hedgehogs In quick succession. Many
Devon' farmers are convinced that
hedgehogs take milk from cows when
they are lying down. They have been
known to kill fowls and suck Innum
erable eggs.

SAYS NEY WAS A GERMAN
English Writer Makes Interesting As
sertion About Most Prominent
French Marshal.
A recent English book about Mar
shal Ney, Napoleon's historic lieuten
ant, "the bravest of the brave," brings
out some Interesting facts.
This Frenchman was really a Ger
man. He was born at Saarlouls, now
in Prussia, and then and always Ger
man. He spoke only German as a
child. He was red-haired, with a wide
face, and round blue eyes. Five feet
eight inches in height, he had a short
body and long legs. His comrades
called him "le rougeot," which was
equivalent to "carrots" or "brick top."
He was forty-six years old at Water
loo. So was Napoleon. So was Well
ington. Michel Ney was a man who was
trained up to the hardships of a work
man's life. His father was a cooper,
and in his boyhood work In his fa
ther's business he was accustomed to
toil anl exposure. This enabled him
to sleep placidly in the snow on the
return from Moscow, wrapped In his
cloak, "with the starved, ragged sol
diers of the grand army keeping
guard, and the Cossacks prowling
around in the darkness."

PETS FOR THE GROWING BOY
Rabbits, Pigeons and Especially Ban
tam Chickens Are Dear to
Heart of Developing Lad.
(By PROF. JOHN WILLARD BOLTEJ
Farming might be defined aa the
art of producing valuable crops from
the soil and disposing of these soil
products In a profitable manner. This
definition la lame, academically, but
It carries our Idea,
The backyard farmer must Include
a great many other factors in his op
erations, aa the pecuniary profits he
derives are of much less Importance
than the beautifying of his surround
ings and of the lives of his entire fam
ily. No Intelligent person can live
amid beautiful ennobling scenes with
out being Influenced for the better,
even though it be unconsciously. In
the same manner, bare, sterile, unin
teresting homes tend to have an ad
veres effect upon their inhabitants,
which will affect them throughout
their entire lives.
Thoughtful people are realizing
more and more that unless, the mind
Is in sympathy with nature, unless
the garden of each person's inner self
Is fertile and responsive to cultiva
tion, there Is small hope of better,
ment from outside Influence. The
adult mind which has been denied
helpful Influences may become Imper
vious to them in time, but the hope of
the race lies in his children.
The child's mind Is a fertile gar
den, which cannot produce Its own
flowers and fruit, but which responds
readily to the treatment It receives,
and bears fruit or evil weeds accord
ing to what we plant therein and how
it Is cultivated. . .
One of the most beautiful and hope
ful things about the whole scheme of
creation is, to our mind, the fact that
every normal child is born square
with the world. He Inherits neither
his parents bodily or mental diseases.
But from the Instant he first cries,
his future depends almost absolutely
upon the care he receives. .
Parents of children have wonderful
opportunity to better themselves and
the entire world by making their own
children better than their parents,
physically and mentally. This is the
only way we have of repaying to our
parents their sufferings and depriva
tions in bringing us to manhood and
womanhood.
There comes a time in every boy's
life when the childish amusements no
longer suffice, and he seeks Interests
out of doors. This Is the time when
the mother ceases to have an eye on
his every movement and he begins to
associate with other boys of his own
age, but of totally different bringing
up, in many cases.
As far as possible, your boy should
be kept under observation at this
time, as he Is at the crucial stage.
Make his home more interesting and
have his playmates there, so that you
can see that he Is associating with'
helpful children, rather than harmful
ones.
Nothing serves to make home Inter
esting to boys at this age so much as
pets of their own. It is a calamity to
have a boy grow up without having
owned a dog of his own.
Rabbits, pigeons and especially ban
tam chickens, are dear to the heart
of the developing lad, and he is just
as much entitled to the helpful com
panionship of pets as he is to a school
education. Let him have full respon
sibility for them, and the results will
take care of themselves.

CLASSED SALMON A8 LUXURY
Doctor's Explanation of Graded Fees
Had to Satisfy Rich but Parsi

A wealthy man, well known for his
extreme stinginess, drove up hurriedly
in his carriage to the door of a cele
brated doctor. He was in a state of
acute discomfort and fear, from the
simple fact that at the moment a
piece of fish bone was sticking some
where in the region of his throat. The
doctor removed the dangerous obsta
cle, and the gentleman breathed free
ly. "Thank you, doctor!" he exclaimed,
much relieved. "I'll never eat salmon
again never! And with what ease
you removed It. A mere minute's op
eration, was it not? How much a
what Is your fee?"
"Half a guinea," replied the doctor.
"Half a guinea!" exclaimed the
man. For half a minute'B work? Im
possible!" "But consider for a moment!" said
the doctor. "It's a salmon bone!"
"What has that to do with it?"
"Oh, a great deal,", replied the doc
tor. "Had it been a halibut, or fresh
haddock, I should have charged less
perhaps 5 shillings. For codfish or
eels, 2-and-6 would have been ample
payment. Mackerel 2 shillings. While
a red herring bone I might even have
removed free of charge. But salmon!
Well, really, sir, one has to pay for
these luxuries."
And his patient paid. London
