In response to en invitation is
sued bv State Forester F.A. Elliott
a number of timber owners and re

house in this city at 10 a. m. last
Friday to discuss the advisability of
organizing a tire patrol association.
The meeting was called to order by
Mr. Elliott and upon motion he was
elected temporary chairman, lit.
Elliott explained that it was neres
sarv to establish a fire patrol to
protect all timber in conformity
with the law enacted by the last
Legislature, and explahed that a
county organization could handle the
situation in a much cheaper basis
than the state could. C. S. Chao
man of Portl; nd made an able ad
dress supplementing the state for
ester's It was moved that an cragniz
ticn be perfected, constitution and
by-laws adopted and a board of
directors elected, whereupon the
Lincoln County Fire Patrol Asso

The folluwing board of diiectors
u-Q3 elected: A. W. Morgan and
V. E. Ball, of Toledo; W. K. Hail
of Siletz; Lewis Montgomery of

The law as enacted by the Legis

Some School
Questions
Can women vote Ht school meet
ings? What are the legal holidays on
which no school should he taught?
Was Lincoln's Birthday a legal
holiday?
These questiuns have been as tad
many times, and I have answered
them each time, by simply quoting
the school law. which, in some in
stances, was not satisfactory. I
have taken' these auestiosn up with
te state departments and am told
as follows:
1. A woman can vcte if she has
property assessed in her name, as
shown by the last county assess
ment, cr if she is the head of a
family of children of schuol age,
her husband for any reascn or
other being disfranchised, or if she
is a widow with children of school
age. That is. in districts ef the
third class. Districts having less
than 200 children of school age are
of the tnird class. In second and
first class districts, to be a legal
voter one must have property as
fesd in her own name or own
sk e' s or shares in some company
or ccrporaton that is assessed, as
shown by the last county assess
ment. If one is elieible to vcte in
a district cf thu first or second
class shy mav vote in districts of
the third clrss. The fpet that
women now nave the right to vote
in all elections, doe3 not change
her pesition with regard to school
elections.
2. The Legal Holidays are Jan
uary 1st February 22d. May 30th,
July 4th. October 12tn, December
25th, and every day on which there
is an election held throughout the
state, and every day appointed by
the Fresident of th United States
or by the Governur of this state for
a public feast thanksgiving or holi
day. 3. Was Lmculn's' Birthday a
holiday? No. It was believed bv
some that it was made a legal holi
day by an act of the Governor, but
it was not. It will be a legal holi
day after the 3d cf June but will
differ from the other holidays, its
school will be open that day.
