with very large hogs that- we knew
would be very unwieldy to handle, we
figured out and built a "gallows" and!

Get a good straight post about 14
feet long and 6 to 6 inches in diameter
at small end. Band this end and bore
a three-quarter-Inch hole in center
about eight Inches deep to . receive
swivel bolt c. Five feet from tor)
mortise holes at right angles to re
ceive cross bars 2 by . 3 inches, on
which hogs are to hang. Into these
mortises Insert arms four feet long
and bolt stay irons, as shown. Now
planj post three feet in ground.
Get a good stout sweep or pole of
white oak or locust about 3V4 or 4
inches In diameter at butt end and in
this end put an eye bolt with good

Cut Bone for Poultry.
Green cut bone is an excellent egg
producer when fed judiciously, says
the Poultry World. The supply should
be secured fresh and it should be fed
as soon as cut. Would not advise feed
ing it every day, as the birds are li
able to overeat and a sure case of di
arrhoea will be the result Three
times a week is often enough to sup
ply this form of feed. I prefer to
mix it with bran or middlings and al
low the birds all they will eat in 15
minutes. If you prefer, it may be
fed clear or it may be mixed with
the mash. If fed mixed with other
foods as above, the birds will not
fight for their share.
Trap for English Sparrows.
Agents of the department of agricul
ture have been experimenting for the
past three months with devices to trap
English sparrows. It has been de
termined upon that these birds are
harmful to the fruit trees In the
spring, eating as they do into the buds
and destroying the cores.
Manuring Garden In Winter.
Any time during the winter or early
spring the garden may be manured.
The spring rains will dissolve rich
ness from fertilizers and carry them
down into the soil for feeding the
plants next summer. It the garden is
manured in winter fresh manure bay
be used with safety, as it will have
lost much of the heat by planting time.
Rules For Measuring Corn.
There are many rules for measur
ing corn. Inquiries conducted by the
Missouri State Board of Agriculture
show the following In common use:
Sixteen cublo feet of corn in the
shock (or extra' well settled 15 feet)
make a barrel. The number of cubic
feet multiplied by the decimal .4
gives the bushels. . Multiply together
the length, width and height of the
pen or crib, in inches, and divide by
4,200 for old corn or 4,300 for new
corn, to get bushels. Where it can
be -done corn should be weighed
rather than measured. '
Getting 8eed Grain Early.
Do not wait until spring to clean
and grade your seed grain. Do it now,
while you have plenty of grain at
hand from which to select The best
twenty-five 'bushels of grain out of a
hundred bushels are , worth much
more for seed than is the grain that
can be cleaned from a much smaller
amount In the spring. The cost of
thus cleaning and grading the grain
is very slight, and it enables one to
have heavy, plump seed grain at very
little outlay.

' Robert Louis Stevenson, for so wise
a man, seems to have been singularly
unaware of, or indifferent to, 'the laws
of health, but that too, may have
been part of his wisdom. He spent
the winter of 1887 in the Adlrondacks
struggling lagainst the disease which
was not to subdue him for seven
years. He lived in a little cottage that
was much overheated and from which
all ventiltaion was carefully excluded.

obscured the atmosphere and perhaps
helped to drive away the visitors who
came to gaze upon him as one gazes
at a lion in a den. ) Fashionable call

Stevenson once remarked, according
to an account in the Medical Record,

which I'd read, but the great washed."
But whoever else was unwelcome

Gigantic Bog Oak Tree.
Twenty tons of bog oak were re
cently unearthed at Llanwrtyd Wells,
Wales. It measures 48 feet long with
a diameter of 2 feet 9 inches. This
giant oak tree is by far the largest
which has been found within memory
on the peat land near Llanwrtyd. Por
tions of it have been exposed for some
years, but no one thought it of such
dimensions and no interest was taken
in it until a few years ago.
