In the evenin f the same day a sermon to young men and women, to which all are invited. Jackson county is one district of the state well organized for in dustrial school fairs this Fall. In terest is high in the movement and tho various committees will offer attractive prizes fur the best work of the school children. In addition to the Countv Fair, various school fairs will be held. Farmers who are interested in growing corn are invited to try seed furnished free by the O.-W. R. & N. Co. Twelve-pound lots will be given out, being about enough to plant one acre, to all farmers ap plying for it. This is acclimated seed and C. L. Smith, agriculturist for that line, maintains that Ore gon can be made one of the fore most corn states. Judge Wolverton of the United States District Court last Tuesday decreed that the Southern Pacific railroad company hud forfeited 2,373,000 acres of land held by the company by virtue of the grant made the company's predecessor, the Oregon & California railroad company, in 1866 and 1870. The decree was based on the grounds that the railroad company had violated the terms under which' the grant was made, in not selling the land to actual settlers at $2 50 per acre. The case will be appealed and it ib expected that it will be two years before a decision is handed down by the Supreme Court and the case settled. Fifty-five of the local Oddfellows and Rebekahs went to Newport on the Truant last Saturday eve ling to parttMoate in the dedication ser vices of the new Oddfellow hall in that city. About three hundred were present at the ceremony and a most enjoyable time was had. Mr, and Mrs. Frank Riebhoff of Oregon City spent their honeymoon in Toledo, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Hayden. They also visited Otter Rock and Newport last week. Mr. Riebhoff formerly resided on the Siletz, where he has a homestead.
