The tallest trees In the world are
the Australian eucalypti, which attain
an altitude of 480 feet The biggest
are the mammoth trees of California,
ome of-which are 276 to 873. feet In
height, and 108 feet In circumference
at the base. From measurements of
the rings It Is believed that certain
of these trees are from 2,000 to 2,600
rears old. The oldest tree In the
world Is said to exist on the Island of
Cos off the coaet of Asia Minor. It Is
several thousand' years -old, bat Just
how many no one has dared to say.
The tree la carefully preserved by a
wall of masonry around It, and the
trunk Is thirty, feet in circumference.
But there are parts of trees In the
form of useful timber which are even
older, probably, than any on the
stump. Beams In old buildings are
preserved today, which are known to
be over a thousand years old. Piles
driven by the Romans prior to the
Christian era are. perfectly sound to
day, and It Is known that they have
been Immersed in water to? upward of
two thousand years.
Some woods have remarkably dur
able properties when immersed in wa
ter. They decay rapidly on the stump,
many rotting in from five to ten
years, but when Immersed In' water
they last longer than iron or eteel.
An effort has been made by our gov
ernment to preserve woods indefinite
ly by treating them with oils and tar
products. Already telegraph poles and
railway ties have had their average
life extended from five to ten years

At school last year, I made a pic
ture frame and gave it to a little girl
who lived near us. She was very glad
to get It One day her father came
to our house and asked me to make a
few frames for him; so I got the card
board, painted and cut them out, fin
ishing them as nicely as I could. When
I gave them to Mr. , he said:
"You ought to make more of these:
I'm sure you could find a ready sale,
and work up a good trade."
"I was glad to have him say so, be
cause I had long wanted to find some
way of earning my pin money. . I
started In making the frames in two
sizes; the largest I marked ten cents,
the small ones five cents, and sold
quite a number.
... Near our house is a curve, where
three roads come together. I went
over there and put up a little bench,
fastening In front of it a sign so that
everybody that came along would
know what I was selling. Nearly every
one bought one, and most took two
or more frames. This summer I shall
try It again, making three sizes.

box of bandages should be kept in
case of accident. Bandages should
be torn from old linen or muslin and
wound tightly in rolls. They should
be of various widths. Also supply
stout, narrow strips for tying,.. It is
advisable to place these bandages in
the oven for a few minutes to sterilize
them. Then place in a hot, wide
mouthed preserve jar and screw on
the lid while an are still hot.
