INSTITUTE.
The annual institute for the
teachers of Lincoln county will be
held May 27. 28 and 29th. While
the program .is not complete the
instructors are engaged. C. H.
Jones of the Oregon Teachers'
Monthly will be with us and do
some work and E. F. Carleton, the
assistant state superintendent, will
assist a part of the time. They
have both been in our institutes
before and we know their part will
be good, but we have never had a
man with us to do institute work
who has a national reputation, so
we think we are extremely fortu
nate in securing Mr. J. C. Muer
nian the specialist in Rural Educa
tion from the Bureau of Education
at Washington. D. (J. He is spend
ing a few months in the w.'st and
is anxious to attend some of the
county institutes. This is the only
county in this state that will have
his help in such a meeting.

J. B. Miller, the railroad man
went to Portland this naming.
A. B. Hunt, deputy fire warden,
was down from Eddvvilie last
evening, returning home this morn
ing.
F. C. Hoffman of Elk City was
a Toledo visitor yesterday.
Joseph Graham of Kings Valley
is visiting friends here this week.
Malcom Miller, the offbearer at
the mill, departed for the Valley
' this morning.
Rails are being laid on the To-
ledo-Siletz railroad. The grading
is being rushed and bridges being
built. Considerable of the filling
will be done with dump cars. The
road will be hauling logs before
man; weeks.
The Toledo Lumber Co's mill
finshed sawing the logs from Olalla
this week and will close down for
two "r three weeks until the new
camps and raiiroad up Depot can
furnish them with logs. While
the mill is idle it will be thorough
ly overhauled and many needed re
pairs made so when it does start it
will be able to cut full capacity,
The company is figuring on operat
ing the mill eleven hours each day
if the men care to put in that long
a day nnd may even put on a night
shift if the lumber market keeps
up like it is at present.

No bid of less than two dollars per
thousand feet, board measure, will
be conidered. ' Each bid must be
submitted in duplicate and accom
panied with a certified check on a
solvent National Eank in the sum
of tnree hundred dollars and draw n
in favor of the Superintendent of
the Siletz Indian School. The right
to wave technical defects in adver
tisements and bids and to reject
any and sll bids is reserved. The
timber must be cut and removed
under regulations, copies of which
may be obtained from the Super
intendent 'cf the Siletz Indian
School, Siletz, Oregon.
SARAH JANE BARNES.
Strah Jane Barnes. 67 years old '
and a resident of Eddyville for,
eighteen years, died April 30, 1913,'
at the Barnes home, oi infirmities ,
incident to old age She had been
ailing for some time and her death i
whs expected by those near her and
knew her condition. Miss Barnes'
was a native of Pernsylvania and
removed to Iowa in 1873. where she
resided until 1895, when she came
to Oregon, settling at Eddyville j
where sne has everafter made her j
home. She is survived by two sis
ters and three brothers, namely,
Mrs. M. A. Book of Pennsylvania,
Mrs. M. E. King of Harris, Or.,
Wm. H. Barnes of Nebraska. A. H.
Barnes of California, and Milton
Barnes of Eddyvile.
The funeral will he held tomor
row afternoun, Monday, May 1st,
and interment will be made in the
Eddyville cemetery.
Mrs. G. R. Schenck visited in Al
bany Monday.

George McBride came down from
Portland Monday evening for a few
days' visit among old scenes and
acquaintances.
Mrs. Niels Anderson arrived
from Kernville yesterday and this
morning departed for Nauavine,
Washington, where Mr. and Mrs.
Andersen will make their home.
Don't forget the concert at the
Dime tomorrow evening. There
will be solus, quartets, and band
and orchestra music. The pro
ceeds will go to the M. E church.
The State Forestry Department
has issued paper drinking cups for
distributiun among school children,
there being printed upon each cup
a' statement of the importance of
preserving the state's timber and
avoiding a heavy loss each Summer.
It is thought in this way the young
will be enlisted in the work of for
est preservation.
The local merchants have agreed
on the following schedule of clos
ing their places of business, be
ginning May 1st and ending May
1.1914: Close at 7 p. m. each
day except Saturday,, when there
will be no regular ' closing h ur.
Sunday open until 9 a. m., and
again at 5 to 7 p. m.

A SERIOUS RUNAWAY.
A runaway uccured on the Jump
off Joe hill Saturday night. A.
Wing with his wife and little girls
and a young man named Fairfield
were in the Oceanhill bus returning
to the hotel frum Newport, and
while going down the grade the
horses became unmanagable. dash
in? down the steep incline, the
wagon being overturned and broken
among the rocks at the bottom.
Mr. Wing had a shoulder broken,
his wife was severely shaken un.
tut the girls miraculously escaped
without injury. Fairfield's ankle
was crushed. Dr. Minthorn was
summoned and set th3 broken
shoulder and attendend to the
crushed ankle and other injuries.
