Miss Ethel Everson returned last week from Portland whtre she spent a month with relatives. The Wilhelmina came in the 26th and departed the same day. Sever al stockholders of the company owning the boat were aboard for an outing. . Prof. McDonald has completed his school at the Yachats and returned to Elk City, where he will again teach this Fall. We noticed in last week's Elk City Items that two Commercial .Club men were coming to locate at Waldport because they enjoyed a quiet life. This is the proper course and in keeping with the in structions of up to date educational institutions. Away from the me tropolis and back to nature. For several years we have been telling people that Waldport was a quite place. We are now assured .that our statement is credited. After being unsuccessful in get ting the Siletz team to play with us last Sunday we finally arranged a game between Waldport and Ye- chats. Some great acrobatic stunts were pulled off during the game including some high tumbling around first base by Sam Olmsted. A big ted bull insisted in playing center field and Cy Patterson tried to duplicate the stunt pulled off on the Toledo grounds by "Fielder Erown," when ho caught a fly from a cow's back, but was unable to get the ball and the bull together long enough to make this possible. Hal cie Glines tried to drive the specta tors fiom the grand stand by insist ing on knocking a series of fouls. The boys are trying to arrange four dars' playing at the Fair. The Ollie S. ame down from New port Tuesday with a crowd of pas sengers who remained long enough for dinner. Capt. Daugherty of the Condor was among the passen gers. Three autos came down from Tidewater Monday afternoon and went down to the Yachats where the party will camp for a few weeks. Fishing at the Yachats has been unusually good this Summer, and with the opening of the hunt ing season it would be hard to find a more enjoyale place to camp. Elk City. W. Angel of Silverton, with his wife and daughter, are among the campers here. Miss Hellen Huston of Corvallis is overv for a vacation. Mrs. G. E. Pernot of Portland, with her daughters, are camped at Blair creek. ,' Mrs. E. W. S. Pratt of Corvallis, with her daughter, Laura, arrived yesterday and will occuy their cot tage here for the season. Miss Elithe Laughary of Dallas is visiting her cousin, Miss Frances Simpson. J. H. McDonald of Ocean View, who has been employed to teach the Elk City school for the coming season, made a call today. Mrs. May Fuller made Elk City a call the first of the week on her way up Big Elk. Mrs. Chas. Van Orden returned from Portland the first of the weekV Frank Linderman of Airlie, who has been visiting with his friend, C. L. Morrison, was called to Cor vallis for a few days. A. B. Clark visited the Lower Bay today with Capt. Whiteford on the launch Swan. The launch Transit took a load of fans and pleasure seekers to Toledo and Newport Sunday. JJ Ollie and Edith Burkhalter re turned home the last of the week. Mrs. H. A. Norton went to ion this afternoon for a visit her people. Mar- with A. C. Ebert will soon erect a cottage on his farm five miles from town known as the Howery place. The hay crop is about all in and mostly of first-class quality. Pota toes and all vegetables tq in fine condition! Lincoln County Fair should make a fine vegetable ex hibit this season. Sea trout are making their ap pearance and several have had good luck the last few days. Glen The Glen people spend most of these hot days picking huckleber iies. Alva Moore has been very ill for the past few days. The dance given a Mr. and Mrs. George Davenport's last Friday night was well attended. Every one went away in the morning declaring they had had a fine time. Miss Edith Davenportvisiteu Miss Clara Moore last Monday. Mrs. W. R.'Moore and children, and Rupert Stewart visited Mr. and Mrs. George Davenport last Tues day. They got" a few scratches from picking blackberries. Mrs. Lester Grant of Harlan visited last Friday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Erown, of this place. s7Gerald Calkins and Vance Daniel of Eig Elk visited with Glen friends last Saturday morning. Chitwood Mrs. C. S. Wilson returned to Eugene Tuesday after a few days' visit with old friends here. Dr. L. H. Wilson and wife of Portland is spending a few days' among old friends here. Dr. Wil son is an optician and is testing eyes. From here they will go to Toledo and Newport. Miss Dellia Trapp returned from Albany and Corvallis Wednesday, where she had been visiting since the 4th. Archie Wilson of Medford is staying with J. E. Wilson . his uncle, and is peeling chittim for L. F. Pepin. Mrs. Kurtichanov is reported much improved. J. E. Wilson went to "Newport Thursday with a load of vegetables and honey. Bayview The farmers have nearly all fin ished getting their hay in the barns. Mrs. Ina Coleman of Portland visited with her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. George Prescott, Friday. E. S. Oakland went to Newport to have some dental work done Tuesday. Ed Stocker and son of Newport were in Bay View last week buying beef cattle. Mrs. W. H. Kent visiUd with her parents the first of last week. Mrs. K. Hendrickson returned home from Albany Sunday. Mrs. Smith and little daughter accompanied her husband with the cream last Saturday. . There was a large crowd attended the dance at E. E. Dyers Saturday night. . George Row in and Will Payment of Waldport visited friends in Bay View Sunday. Mrs. John Guilliams was a Bay View visitor Saturday. Amos Baxter has purchased a team of John Rattey and has en gaged in teaming. He will do a general transfer and draying busi ness and solicits your patronage. Phone Toledo Livery Stables. Harlan John Mitchler has his fine new barn completed and can defy next Winter's 6torms. When the car penters finished their job Mr. Michler gave them a fine dinner which made not only the table but those around it groan for joy. Wm. Mulkey of Toledo has been visiting his son, C. M. Mulkey, the past week. i The Mulkey family went to Al bany to attend the funeral of Emma Mulkey. She was raised here and the neighbors extend their sympathy to the bereaved family over her sad fate. Mrs. B. F. Grant a receiving medical treatment from a Wald port doctor. Edith Lillard is sick with bilious I fever. . ) j Lester January took .his baby to Philomath for medical attention last week. R. R. Black sold all but a small amount of his standing crop to Mc Clellan and Arthur. Marvin Branderberry and family moved in the last week and are living in the Tom Kelly house until the Messrs. Wafer's time expires on the Branderberry ranch, when he will occupy it. Dr. Catbey, accompanied by his daughter, Evelyn, was in last week to see Mrs. P. H. Martin. Glen and Scott Gibbons accom panied by their wives were in camp ing and fishing last week. J. F. Barber sold his sawmill to Chas. Mulkey. John- B?.rtcv ia laid up with sore hand, having run a sliver through one of his fingers. Willie Kessi went to Corvallis to meet his mother and sister, Georgia, who have been attending chatauqua. Otis Haying is now in progress in our parts. John Muir, Jr., is working on the Slab Creek road at present. Mrs. Muir and Mrs Nixon were callers at Mrs. Gilmore's and C. S. tarmele's Wednesday. Mr. Hill sold some cattle this week. Mrs. Her was visiting Mrs. Nixon Thursday. Mr. Her is caring for Mr. Lowe's place while he is in Portland. Sim Burtons' smiling face is seen in our neighborhood again. ' While Mr. Resch was raking his hay thH horses ran away. Mr. Resch was hurt, but not seriously. He is able to be about but cannot pitch hay. Mr. Gorton seems to continue about the same. He is a very sick man and requires someone at his bed side all the time. Kernville. Mr. Resch had a narrow escape. His team became frightened and ran with the hay rake. The tongue came down, throwing Mr. Resch off hurting his hip badly. Mrs. Gerttula is quite sick at this time. The cannery is running the cold storage salting the nicest of the fiish and canning the rest. Mr. Miseire is getting his build ing under headway. He will have a fine place for travelers to stop. Give them a call. One of G. S. Parmele & Sons' cows broke her leg. The Young People's Volunteer Society will give a Religious Liberty Rally the fore part of August. The date will be given later. Messrs. Dodson & Cook's hall is progressing slow on account of not getting shingles. - Haying is being pushed as fast as possible. There will be lots of hay put up in this vicinity. Look out for some fat cattle in these parU. Mr. Editor, we saw in the news of the day that Johnson had whipped another white man. Do you think he could whip a man that can whip his weight in wild cats? We have a man here ready. D. R. Ring of Toledo is in our vicintity looking over the G. S Parmele Sons sawmill in view of buying jr.. If he can make the deal go through he will be here with his family in three weeks. How the neighborhood phones do click. The burden of the talk is haying. Some have lots of hay out in this Oregon'mist. , Riverside V Harvesting is about over now with the exception of a few patches of grain. A few of the boys attended the dance at George Davenport's Fri day night. J. T. Calkins is building a new house on his ranch. Vance Daniel started for the Val ley Monday. Any fellow that will cut the tele phone wire off the fence where the lineman put it, would steal the pennies off a dead man's eyes. Ona Mrs. Walter Weber and Esther Ryan gave a . surprise party on A. W. Weber last Wednesday evening. Everybody had a good time. There will be a dance at the Ona Grange Hall August 3d. All night dance. Everybody invited. Mrs. Smith of Upper Beaver creek was buried at the Ona ceme tery last Saturday. Dr. J. fc. unoaaes or Amity was the guest of Mr. Smith while his mother was sick. We had a meeting at the Ona church Sunday. Quite a large gath ering of Ona people were there. Miss Hilga Holmgreen came home a few days ago to stay with her mother until she gets better. Miss Grace Payne and William Gwynn visited Mr. and Mrs. Rhys Gwynn last week. Mr. Selby, who recently pur chased the Common's ranch, bought four fine Jersey cows of S. C. Denny. Mrs. A. H. Phelps left Thursday for Seattle to make the acquaintance of her little 9 pound grandson, Darrel Phelps Tarter, who arrived at the home of his parents July 24. John Coovcrt took Miss Hester Hill, who left for Portland, to Ya quina Sunday. Rhys Gwynn and family, much to the regret of their friends, are ex pecting to move to Toledo in the near future, on account of the health of their son, Solomon. A. H. Phelps and children spent Sunday at the D. W. Hewett home at West Yaquina. Mrs. Ryan and son, George, from Grants Pass, are visiting with rela tives and friends at Ona. ' L. M. Commons and son, Lloyd, are putting up hay on the Commons (Hultz) ranch, where they expect to move in the near future. Silelz River transportation is now made pleasant and comfortable by the launch Idlewild, which has re cently been thoroughly refitted with a new cabin, and on previous notice will meet parties from Newport, Toledo or Siletz at Mowery's for all points on the river and bay.
