LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1911 COUNTY NEWS News of each Community Gathered each week by Our Hustling Associate Editors Waldport. Tha schooner Patsy came in last week with a seininb outfit which is being operated at Salmon Town. The schooner Fish "of Newport made a trip to Alsea bay last week bringing down a crowd of pleasure seekers. George Nerton, who manipulates the snare drum jn the Waldport Band, accidentally (?) got left in j Toledo last week. E. L. Richardson is repaririglines in Bay View this week. Thejservice between Toledo and Waldport will be greatly improved. The Barnes cannery is erecting a water tank just south of their building. Miss Eva Umphreys has charge of the Lutjens postoffice since Miss Nice went to Newport. Our school opened Monday with a large attendance. Orders for ad ditional seats and desks were tele phoned to the county seat. Miss Bell has charge of the High School work. There will be eighteen in this department. Miss Haggerty and Miss Mary Murphy havejeharge of the grammar grades. The Band returned Saturday even ing, reporting a moat pleasant time at the fair. Waldport was almost depopulated during the fair week. The girls who remained at home report dull times. Dr. M. V. Leeper and wife re turned from Albany last week, af ter a visit with relatives. Henry Simmons is putting a new roof on his building which is occu pied as the Artisan and Grange hall. Dr. Olmsted left Tuesday for Ida ho where he will lecture upon the work of the United Artisans. Mrs. Olmsted will remain in Waldrjort for the winter. J. H. Conrad and wife returned a short time ago from Brownsville, where they spent a part of the sum mer. Mrs. J. W. Chaffin and family and Mrs. E. M. Nye and family of Can al Creek, have moved to Waldport for the winter in order to be near the schools. Seymore Meyers is visiting in Portland and will return in"a few weeks to attend the Waldport high school. Bay View. Floyd and Stanley Kirkland came in from Portland Thursday. Mrs. Molver of Albany has been .visiting relatives at this place the past week. George Stevens'' drove out T to Newport Monday and returned the next day. We understand Mr. Sagendorf has rented his place andj will soon move to Waldport. Lawrence Rowin spent a few days withjhis cousin, Percy Twombly, this week. Mrs. Jesse Lindquistpeft for her home in Portland Monday, after a two months' visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oakland. She was accompanied by her sister, Josie, who will attend school this winter. Mrs. Al Kirkland and daughter, Hazel, are spending a few weeks at their ranch. Blanchard Tullock and wiie came in Sunday. We are informed that they have rented the Barnes place for the winter. Eddyville. Rodger Loudon was a passenger for Salem Monday. Mrs. George Landis of Gold Hill spent Sunday visiting with Mrs. Wakefield. A number of our people departed for the hop yards last week. Paddy Wakefield and Virgil Lou don started for the state fair Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Herring made a flying trip to Toledo Thursday, returning the same day. Irven Magee came up from New port Saturday to look afer his prop erty here, returning home Sunday. Miss Hattie Bruce of Newport has been engaged to teach the Eddyville school, commencing Octo ber 2d. J. P. Stringer went tojhe Valley Saturday morning. Miss Mildred McBride has charge of the postoffice and store during his absence. All those attending the county fair from this vicinity report a good time and claim Eddyville received her share of the ribbons. Laurence McBride went to the fair Wednesday evening, threw his man in a wrestling match, and re turned home Thursday. A much needed improvement was dene the road last week by filling the slough between the postoffie and depot. Credit should be given Mr. Vader for donating the lumber for decking over the fill. Kernville. Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Foda are vistors at Mr. Stone's. Mr. Green is carrying the mail from Otis to Kernville during the absence of Mr. Burton. Mr. Mann, Miss Effie Carnish and Mrs. Alexander and daughter are visitors at Mr. Lays. Jesse Farrin is building a fine house. Mrs. Farrin's health is much improved and she thinks this is the place for her. G. S. Parmele made a business trip to Portland and Astoria last week. Mr. Dodson is having lumber hauled from Salmon river to build a store building. The G. S. Pannele & 'Sons saw mill is running steady these days. Mr. and Mrs. John I. Butterfield, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews Len and Lamen Butterfield, Willie Bones, Misses Birdie Lawlis. Foster New mire, HellenLawlisandMickieLaw lis visited Mr. and Mrs. Stone three days last week. The schooner Gerald C came in Saturday and went out Sunday morn ing. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Stempel have bought the Alec Catfish land on Schooner creek, and have placed a bill at the sawmill for lumber to build a real nice house. Mr. Stem pel traveled far and wide to find a better place then returned to Lin coln county saying this is the best place he has ever found. The Parmele boys are hauling stone for cement foundations and to case in the boiler in the cheese factory. The road fr,m the cannery to Schooner creek past the sawmill has been grubbed and will soon be surveyed. M. E. CHURCH NOTES. R. N. Warnock is in PenceUon attending the Round-up. Miss Hattie Gillette is a visiter at the state fair this week. A. W. Morgan and family went to Drain Wednesday for a visit. Mrs. W R. Moore was a passen ger for Salem the first'ofthe week. Miss Jessie Smith returned to her studies at Corvallis Monday after noon. Rev. Pearce of Siletz was a pas senger for the fair at Salem Tues day morning. E. H. Vader the Eddyville mer chant and family were attending the fair here all last week. When needing winter supples re member the Racket still does busi ness in the same old way and piace. Mrs. H. L. Collins left for Port land yesterday morning in response to a message saying her father was sick. 3 The Masonic Lodge of this city held a big doin's last Monday even ing. Several visitnig masons were up from Newport. W. C. Hoeflein and family of Ya quina and J. S. Akin and family of this place were over on the Siletz on a fishing expedition the first of this week. The Ladies' Aia Society will meet at Mrs. W. E. Lingenfelter's next Tuesday afternoon. All members and those that are interested are re quested to be present. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bradcson went to Salem Wednesday for a visit with the former's parents, and incidentally to take in the state fair. ' Fred Gee went to Corvallis Tues day where he will get a team re cently purchased by M. M. Davis and will bring it over to be used on Mr. Davis' ranch on Mill Four slough. Mr. and Mrs. King who were visiting here with the formers sister, Mrs. C. B. Crosno, and fam ily, returned to their home at Cor vallis the first oi the week. Mrs. Crosno accompanied them home. SCHOOLS OPEN MONDAY. Toledo public schools will open Monday for another nine months' term. School will be held in both the old and new schoolhouses. The teachers for the- different de partments are: Primary, MissOlga Peterson; 2d and 3d grades, Mrs. Edith Howell; 4th and 5th grades, Miss Winifred Spencer; CthandTth, Miss Jean Sharman; Sth and 9th, Mrs. R. P. Goin; 10th, 11th and 12th, Prof. A. H. Weber. Toledo may well be proud of its public schools for they arc the equal, if not superior, to any in this part of the state. The new schoolhouse is modern and up to date, and with good, effi cient instructors in each depart ment the pupils should certanly maks great progress. FOR RENT. Wallace Baldwin of Los "'Angeles is visiting his sister, Mrs. Sam Cen ter, in this city. Adjutant General Williams,; of the G. A. R. department of Oregon was in Toledo yesterday. L. C. Smith, the Newport real es tate man, returned last evening from a visit to the stato fair. Miss Julia Hamar had the mis fortune to fall at the skating rink Wednesday, breaking her arm. Mrs. P. A. Miller and children were down from Pioneer several days last week attending'tho fair. Mrs. Alma Altree and children were passengers for Salem last Sat urday where they will visit rela tives. Mike Strylewicz has purchased the shoe shop of J. 0. Smith and will conduct the shoemaking busi ness on his own hook. Mr. Stryle wicz has been employed in this shop for several months. Mrs. John Kelly and daughter, Miss Flora, of Eugene arrived last evening for a visit with the former's brother, George Hoeflein, and fam ily. Miss Mollie Ros;; won the elegant moonstone in the guessing contest given by A. L. Thomas at the fair last week. The correct number. and her guess, was 333. Mrs. M. L. Trapp came out last night from her home near Chitwood to be at the bedside of her husband who is quite ill at the College Hill sanitorium.
