' Ernest Everson conducted the ex aminations held at the school house last week. Waldport and Beaver Creek crossed bats last Sunday on the home grounds, which were not in the best of condition. Waldport won the game by a good margin. William H. Harrison passed through last week enroute to Ya chats where he visited a few days. Mr. Harrison now resides at Cen tralia, Wash. Quite a number of school teachers left Waldport Tuesday noon to at tend the institute at Newport. Sam Hays is building a house near the post office on ground leased from A. L. Balbwin. (Too late for last week.) James Bales will operate i launch on the bay this summer. He has sent for a new engine of greater power for his boat. The Wilhelmina arrived in at ten o'clock Wednesday morning bring ing a general cargo. Canal Creek people are to have telephone service in the near future. A Hue will be built up the creek by the Lincoln County Telephone Co. Earnest Buker made a trip on the Condor but as she has been bar hound so much recently he thought the life too slow especially when docked for his pay while in port. Dr. Linton's new launch covers the distance between Waldport and Tidewater in fifty-five minutes. This is the best time yet made by any launch on the bay. Ed Broadley has been to see us all with a subscription list for the encouragement of a baseball club this season. Quite a sum was raised in this manner and the boys are looking forward to a pleasant season. Roy McMillin has been elected manager. Although bonds were recently voted to build a $3500.00 high . school a movement is now On foot to raise this to $5000.00 and erect a much better builning. The new . suggestion is meeting with much favor. Elmer Helms has bought ten acres on Mill Slough about a half mile from town. Mr. Helms recently sold his property on the Yachats. Coovert attended the State i Grange at Corvallis last week. Walter Weber and John Coovert succeeded in killing another bear a few days ago. Miss VanHoasen made a visit to her home in Corvallis over Sun day, returning Tuesday for the In stitute at Newport. The Ona boys played ball at Wald port Sunday, Mark Jones captain ( and were defeated. They will play again next Sunday. Gertrude Phelps visited with Miss Leola Hewit Sunday. Quite a number of people in this part of the county are fuffering with severe colds., Mrs. L. M. Com mons being quite ill for the past week, also Arthur Holmgreen is ill with it. Little Helen Phelps is absent from school on account of illness. Miss Clari DeLay and Gertrude Phelps are attending institute at Newport. Reece Jones expects to leave in a few days for Brooks, Oregon, where his parents reside. He has been with his brother Mark on their South Beaver Ranch for several months. Floyd Day of Dumpy Brown's landing visited Fred Commons Sun day returning home Monday morn ing. There will le a basket social and dance at the G range Hall at Ona May 26. Everybody invited. Girls bring your pretty baskets'. Mrs. A. II. Phelps spent Mon day at the Commons Ranch . Harry Ellis of Dallas spent last week with John Coovert and helped capture the bear, Mr. Yerix is visiting his ranch at Seal Rocks. A. W. Weber is in Postland this week. Jess and Clum Gwynn have gone to Toledo to work. Miss Hester Hill has completed a long term of school two miles north of Toledo. We will be glad to have her in our midst again. Walter Weber is shipping cream now. Guy Twombly is attending school in the Guilliams district. His sis ter Jennie at the Ona school. Some of the people who have cot tages at Seal Rock have been in, Mr. and Mrs. GeiHer among them. Bay View. Henry Hendrickson has gone to Toledo to work. L. C. Powell was in Bay view Monday. J. C. Dougherty was looking over the road toward Beaver Creek Mon day. We hope he soon intends to do some work on the bog. Fred McWillis spent Sunday on Beaver Creek with his sister, Mrs. H. L. McKenney. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lonsdale of Waldport were Bayview visitors Saturday. S. McWillis returned home from Portland last week. The men ot Bayview turned out and repaired the tramway so now it is possible to get out at any stage of the tide. Mr. and Mrs. J. Earley visited at J. C Barnes a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. K. Hendrickson arjd Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Oakland spent Sunday with Martisons at Tidewater. There w no school this week, the teacher having gone to Institute. We were all glad to see the rai. come, but now woulu be just as pleased to see some sunshine. Walter Kent and wife spent Sun day in Bayview. Kernville. Messrs. Taylor and Ring have their houses built and have moved in with their families. They will run the Parmele sawmill. They have a contract for cutting 500,000 feet of lumber for Parmele & Sons. Messrs. Lai ion, Comer and Tay lor are working for Taylor & Ring in the sawmill. The ladies' Club is a grand suc cess. Thert were 25 present at their last meeting. Mr. Jenkins understands just how to entertain a large crowd an I makes all foeT wel come. The Club will meet with Mrs. Brown next time. The Kernville cheese factory is near completion. The machinery will soon be placed and cheese mak ing begun in earnest. Mr. West's pony power is now at the sawmill ready for delivery. Mr. West has the machinery and Mr. Dickens has been trading calves for dogs. Something will happen soon as this power can be run by dogs. L. C. Parmele of Cottage Grove is visiting his two sisters, the Misses Emmie and Julia Parmele here. Hurrah! hurrah 1 cries the fish ermen. A new cannery is to be b.uilt here and is to be ready for operation by fishing season. Mi. Lay and brother in law, Lu ther Alexander, of Gaston, Oregon, made us a visit last week. C. S. Parmele and family are at home to all their friends. The sad death of an esteemed neighbor, Mrs. Lowe, struck the heart strings of all, and all feel a deep sympathy for the husbard and children. We are greatly concerned about Mr. George Wood and wife leaving us. Wc hope- they will meet with friends and success in their new homo. Miss Hellen Wisniewski was mar ried last Sunday to a young man from Bachelors Island. The priest came tUiwn from the Agency to perform the ceremony. Anion Bones is pushing work on the road as fast as he can. H. F. Parmele made a trip to Toledo a few days ago after a load for Messrs. Taylor and Ring. Sabbath sohool and meeting every Saturday at 10:30 a. m., near the sawmill. All are invited to attend. We extend a welcome to the new posmaster at Kernville. Jesse Farrin will build a barber shop in the new town at the mouth of the bay. Mr. McCormick and Mr. Boham have the contract of cutting 500,000 feet of timber for the G. S. Par mele sawmill company. Otis. O. E. McMillan and John Dick ens made a trip to Toledo this week to look after road matters. The County Court dono the fair thing, they say, wiiu tins puil of the county. We have a good lot of county officers. If you want fine dogs go to Drift river, but Otis is the place to get fine calves. We suppose that is the reason that wind work cheese factory don't go. They are raising dogs down there instead of cattle. Put. Glen of Lafayette has moved to Salmon river. He is going to run the Corby plac and milk for the Hardin factory. More men like these are what we want in this part. We are sorry to have to relate the sudden and sad death of Mrs. Lowe, wife of Professor Lowe of this neigh borhood, through an accident of fall ing down stairs while her husband and son were absent for a short time On their return they found her ly ing dead at the foot of the stairs with some books ami a lamp in her hands. It is thought tlmt she was suddenly attacked with heart disease as she had been complaining of such attacks fer some time. Her hus band and son have the sympathy of all. She was a lady much respected. They took her body to the Valley for burial. Mr. Tabor's new sawmill is run ning now at Charley Hardin's place. He has a nice little mill and a fine lot of timber to work on. This stormy weather makes it hard for road work. The county i going to bridge the Baxter crossing. The bridge when done will be over two hundred feet long and will be a great help to this end of the road. The way it is now the mail carrier has to swim bit horse when the watr is up, and has to make three trips a week from Otis to Kernville. Lots of la grippe in these parts now. This stormy weather is bad for it. Eddyville. Rev. Silas Howell preached at Eddyville Sunday. F. C. Aldrich went to Portland Moi.day. Mrs. N. T Hibben departed for Portland Priday morning. James Stitt came up from Port land Saturday, returning Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield wont to Ncrtons Sunday. Mrs. McDulin of Portland is vis iting her daughter, Mrs. R. W. Veit. The C. & E. Railway bridge crew is at work near Eddyvilla. "J. M. Ward of Corvallis spent Sunday with A. M. Baxter, re turning home Monday. T. S. Stanley and Mr. Schoop, who have both filed on homesteads near here, came to Eddyville Saturday. E. H. Vader returned home from Portland Saturday, where he had been to lay in his Summer stock of goods. The Little Elk Juniors and the Eddyville nine played a game of baseball Sunday. Eddyville won the fcame by a score of 14 to 9. The stork when passing the resi d nee of R. W. Veit, the 12th inst., left a little baby boy weighing 11 pounds. The father and child are getting along nicely. The picnic held at the Little Elk Bchoolhouse Tuesday in honor of the teacher, Miss Sawyer, was well attended . it being the last day of the school term. Miss Sawyer had arranged a good program which was enjoyed by all. The following four pupils were successful in passing th eighth grade examination: Ro.jtr Loudon, Clifford Wakefield, Virgil Loudon and Roy Reynolds. Miss Sawyer departed for her home at Gervais this morning. A "Cheerful Liar." The play by that name given by the pupils of the High School as sisted by Prof. Weber last Thursday evening was very creditably ren dered". The hall was packed to the limit and the receipts which were correspondingly large will assist greatly in purchasing a piano for the school. The entire cast was good there was not a flaw in any part and while the play was a difficult one every member did their turn well. The following is a cast of the characters: Hastings Hussel J. P.
