WILL R. KING
Judge of the Supreme Court
Candidate for Re-Election, Six
Year Term, Whose Place is
Sought by Geo. H. Bur
nett, Assembly
Nominee.
Judge Will R. King was born near
Walla Walla, Washington, Oct.
and removed to uregon in the
spring of 1871, since which time he
Jias been a continuous resilient of
lliis state. His college education
Avas acquired in the State Agricult
l'ual College, after which he gradu
ated from a taw school in Danville,
Indiana. He commenced the prac
tice of law in 1892, served six years
in Oregon Legislature, two years in
the House and four in the Senate,
and was recognized as one of the
leading members of that body. He
has served four years on the Supreme
Btri ch, two years as commissioner,
and two as associate justice, and is a
candidate to succeed himself for the
six year term.
That his decisions rank high among
the bar is evident from the fact that
he is supported, along with the
three other members of the Bench
H ho arc candidates ( Judge Moore,
MoBHde and Slater ), by the non
palittcal judiciary movement, which
was authorized by the Oregon State
Bar Association, and has for its
)ject the complete removal of the
judiciary from political obligations
and Influences. In referring to
Judge King the Oregon Daily Jour
nal of Portland, recentlysaid: "One
of the ablest jurists in Oregon is
Supreme Justice Will R. King. He
is known throughout the state as an
independent thinker of profound
powe-s of analysis. He has the
reputation among laymen as well as
the members of the bar of applying a
gtyat deal of common sense as well
as broad intelligence in construing
the law. Judge King is opposed by
George II. Burnette, who was nom
inated by the Assembly, who accept
ed the nomination from the assem
bly and who stands on the platform
niif the assembly ". Against
the custom of selecting the Supreme
Vourt according to the politics of
t!ie candidates, the Non-Political
Judiciary executive committee ad
vances among others, the following
Arguments:
A non-political supreme court
nueaiiS a supreme bench with no
party debts to pay. The judges of
the supreme court arc strictly non
political ; the supreme court, then
ahotad be on a non-political basis.
It is only political hacks that want
(to make the Bnch a reward for
political service.
No injury is made into the politi
cal opinions of a juror; the politics
of a judge has just as little to do
with his qualifications.
There is no good reason why good
judges should be put off the bench
on account of politics and other jud
ges put on the bench in their stead
en account of politics.
Remember the four candidates
recommended by the Non-Political
Judiciary movement aro Judges
King, Slater, McBride, and Moore,
all present member of the Supreme
Court. (Paid Advertisement.)

, Judge John S. Coke is the regular
Republican nominee for Circuit
Judge to reside in Coos County, but
he is not the nominee for the Demo
cratic party, though his name may
appear on the ballot as " Republican-Democrat".
By pre-arrange-ment
his name was written on the
Democratic primary ballot in a num
ber of precints and he received pro
bably 100 votes in the entire district.

J. M. Upton, independent candid
ate for Circuit Judge to reside in
Coos County would have the voters
of Lincoln County defer to the wishes
of the people of Coos Bay, who alone
are specially concerned in the matter
of that Judgeship. Mr. Upton was
endorsed by over 700 voters of all

Communication.
Rose Lodge, Or., Cct. 10, 1910.
Editor Leader: -Wo have been
favored with a visit from two county
candidates, Mr. Morrison and Mr.
Stocker, and I think the way most
people at this end of the couniyfeel
they will get a good vote. As it is
we have a Republican Court and a
Republican Assessor and here we
have a Democratic deputy assessor
and a Democratic road supervisor.
So if that is the way our Republican
officers are going to do Ave will try
and put Democrats in first place.
I am not the only one that thinks
this way in these parts.
There was a lot of bridge work
paid for by the county that if the
Court had looked it over I think
they would have cut the bill.
Frank McCoumick.
To Voters.
Less than 309 voters in the district
affected signed the Washington-
Multnomah county annexation pet
ition; 500 in the district have sign
ed a remonstrance, practically all
outside the district are against an
nexation, yet you are called upon to
vote the addition of practically one
fourth of Washington, one of the
smallest counties, to Multnomah,
already the wealthiest, most influen
tial and powerful. Voters of the
slate outside, of the counties affected
can know but little of these county
division measures. We of Washing
ton know nothing of merits of those
not affecting us, and believe such
questions should be left to the coun
ties affected. Washington county
cannot afford to lose this territory
and Multnomah docs not need it.
We ask you to vote 339 X No. W.
D. Wood, Chairman Anti-Annexation
Committee, Hillsboro, Oregon.
