Citizens Meet to Form
Fort Association.
Last Friday evening one of the
most enthusiastic and best attended
citizens' meetings ever held on the
liny, was held in the Toledo City
Hall. The meeting was called to"
order by electing Attorney Oscar
MiddlekaufT of Yaquina as chairman
and Lee Wade as secretary. Mr.
Montgomery and a mnnkr of our
pominent citizens then made short

did not see fit to improve our bay
and river, by removing the small
bars, snags, etc., thereby opening it
tip to navigation, we could take it
upon ourselves and form the district
(surrounding Yaquina Bay into a
Port, said port being empowered to
issue, and sell bonds. The money
from these bonds being used to im
prove the bay and river. A com
mittee of five was appointed to can
vass the county, holding meetings in
the different localities and creating
enthusiasm.
This committee is also to appoint
sub committees in the different lo
calities. Those appointed on , this
committee were, Lewis Montgomery,
Oscar MiddlekaufT, J. F. Stewart,
C. B. Crosno, and E. J. Avery
Money was subscribed to defray the
expenses of this, committee. A
motion was made and carried that
this be known as the Hiver & Harbor
Improvement Association, with
Oscar Middlelr.mil as permanent
chairman, nnd Lee Wade ns Secre
tary-Treasurer.
After this committee has made a
canvass of the county or district, and
if their plans are accepted and
thought feasible by ,the people," an
election will be held and the For
projxsition submitted to the people
Government engineers have es
timated that 50,000 will remove al
obstruction!) to navigation so that

lumber can load nt Toledo.

With this bay ointn as a coninicr
cial center, Newiwrt will become
one of the largest summer resorts on
the Pacific Coast, while Elk City ant
Toledo will 1 manufacturing cent
i ts. In a few years the shores of
Yaquina Bay will bo covered witl
manufacturing enterprises.
The committee held a rousing
meeting at Elk City Wednesday, nt
w hich J. C. Dixon was elected chair
man and Chas. Allen secretary. It
W).s voted unanimously to create
the port. The committee will hold
another meeting at Newport next
Monday, and another at Eddyville
within a few days.

levies have been made. Consequen
tly taxes will be high in most
listricts, but our people want more
and better roads and schools and
are willing to pay the price. ,
It behoves the people of Lincoln
county to keep the Fruit Associa-.
tion alive and in good working order.
Everyone who :an possibly do so
should attend the meeting of the
Association to be held in Toledo on
February the Dth and do his part
in accomplishing this. Whether
you are a fruit grower or not you
should be interested. Come and
lend your aid.

I this coming Summer. At Toledo
the two big sawmills, their logging
camps, the light plant, the dredger,

pany's construction outfit, the ship
yards nnd boat works, the tannery,
the rock crusher and road building,
etc., besides a number of new houses
that are to be built, will all require
many men. The railroad building
to Newport, that city's waterworks,
light plant and creamery, and many
other improvements there will re
quire lots of men. The other saw
mills will requiro their quota of
men, besides nearly every ro.id dis
trict in the county is preparing to
build roads and will need labor.
