After Three Tears ot Idleness the bif Sawmill at Toledo will Begin Sawing. Last Tuesday evening Lewis Montgomery, of the firm of Mann A Montgomery, with headquarters at Portland, owners of the Fir & Spmcc LuTsber Company's hnfHnjri at this place, arrived, accompanied by several men, engineer, cruisers, etc., and the following morning began preparations for starting the big sawmill here. The mill is be ing repaired and the machinery ad justed, wliich work will .take a couple of weeks, then sawing will be commenced. . , Mr. Montgomery says it is their intention to operate the mill stead ily. They will not attempt to run the milr to its full capacity, but will be content to cut in the neighbor . hood of thirty thousand daily, re quiring twenty or thirty men in the mill. The logging camps will start immediately, thus requiring many more men. The company has a million and a half feet of logs in the water in booms and aboui that many feet cut in the woods, but they will be gin cutting more as soon as things can be put in working order. TH0S. LEES , President. WM . SCARTH, Cashier An Important Meeting,. A meeting of the citizens of Lin coln county has been called to meet at the City Hall here this evening. This is an important meeting and Hhould le attended by every citizen. The object of this meeting is to take some action looking to the dredging of the river from Elk City to deep water on the lower river. This is a matter of most vital mpartance to the entire Bay country aid all Lincoln county. It. is ab solutely necessary that the river be improved so that coasting vessels be enabled to get up to Toledo and Elk City to carry out the output of the mills and other products of the country. Unless this be done we cannot progress; our commerce will till continue to be strangled. Our representative in Congress writes that he is exerting his utmost influence to have a bill appropri ating money for this work passed, but does not seem greatly cn ouraged. The fact of the matter is we have got a situation to meet that every .waterway in Oregon, outiside of the Columbia, is up against. The atti tude of the Government, through i(s engineers, is dead against uh, and to our mind, no help can le expected from the government with in time to do us any good. We have got to help ourselves, and to depend upon ourselves alone. For tunately there is a way open to do this. We can follow in the foot steps of Coos Bay, Sfuslaw, Tillu- nook and Nehalem and form a,poit of our own and make our own im provements. It is vital (hut we do this, and action in that direction should be taken at once. Our sawmill and other indus tries are- handicapped; our .mar chants must pay exorbitant rate upon everything that they ship in or out, all because our river has two or three small bars in it. Fifty thousand dollars is more than ample to dredge the river from Elk City - to Yaquina deep enough to allow vessels to bring in, cargoes of merchandise and to carry out car goes of lumber and farm products, and the saving in freight in five years alone would pay the bonds, to say nothing of the enormous increase in business that it would originate. : The thing to do is to help our selves. We have the commerce, let us b3 independent and make use of the water that a beneficent Provi dence has sent flowing past our doors, and be no longer vassals to any corporation, nor stand longer begging for what a niggardly gov ernment should freely grant us. Come out tonight prepared to help along a movement to place Lincoln county and Yaquina bay upon the commercial map of the world. Just arrived my large assortment of up to date shoes of all . kinds.
