Waldport.
About an inch of snow fell Satur
day. Miss Agnes Baldwin is visiting in
Portland.
James K. Berry has returned lo
Waldport after a visit in Newport.
Fred Wann left last week for
Portland and will go north again
early in the 6pring.
George Nuske has a contract for
painting some buildings at Gresh
am, Oregon, and left for that place
Friday.
Charles Stouder, who has had
considerable experience in band
work has identified himself with the
Waldport organization and is at
present playing first cornet.
Walter Kent and Wess Bales left
last week for Portland where they
will be employed during most of the
winter.
Supervisor Hays has closed the
Waldport bridge as it is in a danger
ous condition. A contract was
awarded to L. V. Colvin several
months ago for rebuilding the bridge
but up to this time no work has
been done.
C. N. Thompson has been cir
culating a petition for the laying
out of a, road from Tidewater to To
ledo. He is receiving much encour
agement and if numbers count he
will succeed.
The Artisan Lodge elected a new
set of ollicers at their last meeting.
The lodge is steadily growing and it
is seldom that a meeting passes
without the introduction of one or
more new members.
Peter Hoover came over from
Bellfountain Sunday and spent the
first few days of this week transact
ing business in Waldport.
J. A. Bunch is up from his Big
Creek ranch and is doing teaming
at Waldport. There ought to be
plenty of work in this line for there
are no other teams in Waldport at
this time.
. J. Fred Yates, the Corvallis at
torney, came over last week and
has been doing some legal work for
the telephone companies and the
Waldport lumber Company.
Notices of a special road meeting
have been posted by our supervisor.
The meeting is called for the 14th
and it is proposed to levy a sufficient
tax to put our roads in good condi
tion. A benefit dance was given in
Kent's hall Saturday evening. The
proceeds which amounted to about
thirty -six dollar will be turned over
to Lon Goodman who has been sick
for a long time and unable to do
any kind of work.
A band concert and basket social
will be given by the band boys on
the seventeenth. Admission will
be ten cents and ladies with baskets
will be admitted free. After sup
per the floor will be cleared for
dancing, which will be free.
Miss Esther Williamson has
charge of Mrs. Jenkin's store this
week while Mrs. Peterson is visiting
in Newport. ,

with friends.
Mr. Baxter came through Satur
day with a load of freight for Mr.
York of Drift Creek.
Fred Kirkland returned home
Friday from Toledo, where he has
been working the past few months.
John Dougherty of Drift creek
was a visitor on South Beaver Fri
day. Emma Hendrickson has been
spending a few days up Drift creek

Mrs. Kirkland and daughter,
Hazel, went to Newport Wednesday
returning Friday.
Celia Martinson of Waldport spent
Sunday visiting friends at Bay View.

The steamer Oshkosh came in
Friday laden with supplies for all.
The fast is broken. There were
lots of people living on fish and
potatoes.
Mr. Morrison has feed, cattle,
chickens, a horse and buggy for
sale. He intends moving to New
port. G. S.Parmele & Sons lost a fine
horse. On examining him they
found he had Bright's disease,
although he was in good condition
when he died.
Mr. Henistreet has moved on his
homestead. Mr. Wood is our post
master now.
Died Jesse Taylor, at Pheonix,
Arizona, November 29, 1909. Jesse
was well known in Toledo having
lwen born and raised here being the
eldest son of Al Taylor. He has'
been a sufferer with consumption
for some time and recently went to
Arizona hoping to be benefitted by
the change. He died just nine days
after his arrival there.

Rev. Burns preached at the school
house Sunday, after a hard trip
down the Valley and the river.

were visitors at Bay View Sunday.

An army of men is at work build
ing railroads up the interior of the
state. The Winter season' is not
stopping the work and during the
coming year trains will be run into
Central Oregon, making a wide
agriculturial region accessible to far
mers. New railroads, too, are en
tering the coast country, while in
the Southern end of the Btate, rail
road builders are pushing north
from Klamath Falls to Natron on
the new Southern Pacific line.
! Electric projects are active in the
I Willamette Valley. On the whole
( it looks like the coming year wll be
a record one in railroad building for
Oregon. '
Ben Jones Gets Job.
Representative B. F. Jones of
Lincoln and Polk counties, has
been named to succeed Benjamin
L. Eddy as register of the Roseburg
land office. The appointment
comes through Senator Bourne.
Ben Jones' friends in Lincoln
county are many and they are glad
to hear of this honor conferred upon
him.
The City Election.
The annual City election held last
Monday resulted in the election of
C. B. Crosno, Lee Wade and Lee
Bartholomew as councilmen, and
Ted McElwain as marshal. Tnr
was but one ticket and everything
passed off very quietly. There was
about half the votes cast. Neither
Wade nor Bartholomew's names
appeared on the ballot, but friends
of the gentlemen elected them by
writing their names on the ballot.
Crosno and McElwain were the only
names printed, Messrs. Wade and
F. W. Carson, who were nominated,
refused to aect.pt' the nomination.

Louie Fuller Jugged.
Last Tuesday morning Louie Ful
ler, an Indian from Siletz was tried
in Justice Norm Anderson's court
for stealing a watch from II. E.
Peterson the jeweler. Deputy Pro
secuting Attorney Hawkins appear
ed for the state, Fuller handled his
own case. After hearing the testi
mony Judge Anderson decided Ful
ler was guilty and fined him 10,
and in the absence of the cash, Mr.
Fuller will reside in the Toledo jail
'for the next twenty days.

Cleve Fish returned home from
the Valley Monday evening where
he has been working the past
several months.
J. Margsoif and family of Winant
were in town Tuesday. The follow
ing morning they departed for Los
Angeles, where they will spend the
winter, returning in April.
Mrs. C. E. Hawkins went to
Portland Wednesday to meet her
daughter, Miss Aile.n, who has been
visiting the past several months in
Arkansas. They are expected home
this evening.
Mr. Murray informs us that ho
made a mistake in the subscription
list he had published in last week's
issue of tho Lea men in the fact that
II. Lewis should have been credited
with $15 instead of 81.
Messrs. Weldin and Ames, steam
boat inspectors, were in the city the
latter part of last week for the pur
pose of inspecting the steamer Tru
ant, owned by tho Modern Improve
ment Company. They fouifd every
thing all O. K. and departed Satur
day morning for tho Valley.
The old Larson place two miles
north of town has again changed
hands. Last Summer B. M.
Keithly bought the place of Hans
Larson and after holding it but a
few months sold it this week to
Thomas Crcistopher, making a meat
profit. Both sales were madu
through North, the real estate man.
Mr. Keithly will not leave this
county, but will look for another
farm .
John Turnidge, who recently pur
chased the C. A. Dick property on
Grove street, has mado many very
noticable changes with tho premises .
He has raised the houses, built new
walks, etc., which adds greatly to
the appearance of tho place. He
moved in last Saturday. Leo Bar
tholomew and family, who have
occupied the place for tho past few
years, are now occupying the Ben
Jones residence.
New Train Servise on the Cor
vallis & Eastern.
On Nov. 1st a straight passenger
train was established on the Cor
vallis A Eastern between Albany and
Yaquina, leaving Albany at 12:35
p.m. and ariving in Yaquina 5: 15
p.m. Returning leave Yaquina at
7:15 a.m. arriving in Albany at
11:15 p.m., making direct connec
tions at Corvallis anil Albany with
Southern Pacific train to and from
Portland and other S.P. points north
and south.

has lived in Toledo for several years
and will bo greatly missed by their
many friends. May success go with
them.
