Coll Van Cleve, a pioneer news
paper man and a resident of the
Bay since 1882, whp has been resid
ing with his son, Pi. S., in Toledo
for the past seven years, went to
Portland Wednesday, accompanied
by Mrs. Fred Van Cleve, who ar
rived here Monday for the purpose
of taking her father in law back
with her. Mr. Van Cleve will
make his future residence in Port
land. M. J. Allphin celebrated his
eighty-first birthday last Sunday.
Mr. Allphin has issued a Thanks
giving proclamation. lie says the
president had not reached Wash
ington, the governor was away and
County Judge Gardner was at his
farm on Siletz, and that the duty of
issuing the proclamation falls on
him. He has designated next Sun
day as the day and name chicken
as the thanksgiving bird.

Mrs. Helen D. Harford, a prom
inent lecturer for the W. C. T. U.,
closed a series of lectures at the M.
E. church in this city Wednesday
evening. Mrs. Harford was assisted
in these meeting t by Rev. Pearce.
The subject of Mrs. Harford's lec
tures was prohibition. Wednesday
evening the school children gave a
drill which was indeed very pretty.
The young people have organized a
choir for the church gatherings
which is appreciated by all. The
attendance to the lectures was good.
