BASEBALL
Siletz, 7; Corvallis, 4f
That big championship game of
baseball was pulled off at Toledo
as per schedule last Sunday after
noon between the Corvallis and
Siletz teams. One of the largest
crowds to assemble at the baseball
grounds this season witnessed the
game, which was a hard fought
game from start to finish. It was
also a good, clean exhibition of fast
ball, free from all wrangling.

Paul Schmidt has purchnsed a
lot in Waldport and will put up a
blacksmith shop.

W. B. Nelson and family of Port
land are spending their vacation on
their farm near Waldport.
C. J. Smith and party spent
Tuesday at the Yachats. The smelt
were running at the time and a j

dance Friday night. A ood crowd !
attended and enjoyed the occasion.
The Waldport Band gave a dance
at Yachats Saturday evening in
Hosford's Hall. A large number
of Waldport people attended and
the campers at Yachats enjoyed the
music. A concert was given Sun
day befoie the party started for
home.
Miss Zoa Nye of Seattle is visiting
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Nye, and brothers at Toledo.
James Hoover and M. Turk re
turned Tuesday to Milwaukie after
a week's visit at Mr. Hoover's farm
at Siletz.
Judge George Umphrey of Port
land went through to Newport
Wednesday for a short vacation at
the beatfh.
Willie Alexander, who with his
mother went to Baker City several
months ago, is just recovering from
a serious case of blood poisoning in
his hand.
Sawmill at Siletz.
The boiler, engine and other ma
chinery for the new sawmill at
Siletz arrived in Toledo Tuesday
and will be taken to the Siletz as
soon as possible and installed.
Messers Collins & Kimmel the
builders and owners of the mill ex
pect to be sawing within thirty
days. '
This sawmill will mean much for
Siletz as they have been without a
mill at that place since the one
burned a few years ago. It will
not only supply the whole Siletz
valley with lumber but will .furnish
employment for a great many men
in the woods and at the mill.

noon for a visit with Mr. Bethers'

teaching, to take the teachers ex
amination which is being held here

Judge T. A. McBride and wife of
Oregon City arrived in Toledo last
Saturday evening for -a visit with
their daughter, Mrs.. F. Newton.
They went to Siletz t yesterday and
will camp for alxiut three weeks on
the homestead of their son, George
M. McBride.
Last Friday while Henry I,ewis
was bringing Mr. and Mrs. T. J.
Buford to town to take the train for
their home in Portland,' the horse
became frightened and in running
away threw the occupants all out
of the vehicle. ''Mrs. Buford was
struck by the trunk and other bag
gage and sustained a broken arm
j and other injuries. ''""""
Joe Ludwig1 Suicides.
Last Monday morning at about
5 o'clock, Joe Ludwig, aged 60,
committed suicide by shooting him
self in the head with a shotgun, at
Otter Rock where he has been liv
ing the past year. He had made
arrangements for his death by carry
ing his bed out in front of his cabin,
then writing a note bidding all good
bye, placed the muzzle of the shot
gun to his head and pulled the
trigger blowing the whole top off
his head. Thus ending the earthly
troub'es of Joe Ludwig.
The body was found about 8
o'clock by Mrs. Cody, one of the
campers at the resort, us she was
going down the trail to the agate
beach. The report of a gun was
neara at o o ciock in the morning
when undoubtedly the deed was
done.
The body was brought to Toledo
Tuesday afternoon and buried in
the grave previously prepared by
the deceased at his little home in
this city.
Mr. Ludwig was a widower and
had a daughter in the insane asylum
at Salem. He had lived alone in
Toledo for the past twenty years,
until alwut a year ago, when he

built a cabin and has resided there
since. He was a shoemaker but

At the Fruit Growers Meeting.
Pursuant to a call published in
this paper last week by the Secre- for the regular August term of Cir
tary, a few members of the Lincoln cuit Court to be held in Toledo,
County Fruit Growers Union met commencing next Monday:

noon. The attendance -was not
large but there was considerable in
terest taken by those present.
George Bethers tendered his
resignation as secretary of the Union
on account of absence from the
county and George Smith of Chit
wood was elected secretary to take
his place.
The new secretary was instructed
to write to all apple buyers operat-

amount of boxes needed, price, etc.,
and all other matters pertaining to
the apple crop.
Each member was constituted a
committee of one to solicit new
memlers for the Union.
The next meeting will be held at
