BASEBALL
Nashville Won; Toledo One
The Nashville baseball team came
down Sunday to play ball with the
local team . By some hook or crook
the Toledo ball players had made
plans for other amusements for the
day before word came that the
Nashville team would be here and
were nearly all out of town. A
scrub nine was rounded up after the
Nashville boys arrived and a game
played. The Toledo boys played
hard but as some of them were
never known to play ball before and
the best of their players had not
played for a long time they made
lots of funny piao. The ecoie
stood something like 30 or 40 to 1
or thereabouts.

Indian Murdered.
Last Friday word came to Toledo
that Clayborne White, an Indian
24 years old living on Rock Creek
on Siletz, had been murdered. His
body was found lying in the road
near his home by Solomon Wigle,
a farmer living near there, early
Friday morning. Sheriff Ross and
Coroner Carter went immediately
to the scene. They found that
White had been shot through the
body with a rifle or revolver.
The circumstances possible to ob
tain are as follows: Pete Muggins
had been sent to town for whiskey.
He left the train at Nortons where
his horse had been left and was met
then by Homer Evans. They went
over the hill to Rock creek and j
when near Nellie White's place '
were joined by
Logsdon, when
White and Carl
a drinking bout
ensued. It is presumed that in
a fight which probably took place
one of the three other Indians fired
the 'shot that killed White.
Several conflicting stones are told ,
by the three, but the truth will
probably be brought to light be the
preliminary hearing to lx) held be-
fore United States Commissioner :
Gardner here today. j

Parrish Dams Olalla.
J. W. Parrish is just putting the
finishing touches to the dam across
Olalla slough a half mile southeast
of town.
' Mr. Parrish legan the construc
tion of this dam more than a year
ago and had it very nearly comple
ted last Fall when an accident oc
eured in which some of the plank
ing was knocked off letting the
water in which soon washed out the
loose dirt. In a few days the dam
was almost destroyed. For several
weeks litigation seemed inevitable,
but finally all parties interested by
concessions came to an agreement,,
and this summer Mr. Parrish began
the reconstruction of the dam. He
has had a crew of men working for
several weeks and the dam is again
completed. The gates will be
closed and the tide shut out today
or tomorrow.
The building of this dam means
much to Lincoln county. It is a
sort of an experiment. If it will
stay in and accomplish that which
it was intended, it will be the means
of reclaiming hundreds of acres of
the best land in the world. The
dam is intended to shut out the
tide water that lias always over
flowed this land at extreme high
tides. A sluice-way 1C feet wide
with strong lock gates will allow
the water above the dam to pass
out at low tide and prevent it re
turning during flood tides. The
land above the dam will not be
overflowed and diking in the future
will be unnecessary.
If this dam is a success thousands
of acres of other lands along the
many similar sloughs in this county
will be reclaimed in the same way.
The richest land in the world is
this overflowed tideland but unless
the water is kept ofl' it is practically
waste lands. Hundreds of acres
have been reclaimed by the expen-
! sivc method of building dikes along
the banks of the sloughs to prevent
overflow during high tides,- but
there are thousands of acres in the
county that can only be used for
grazing purposes and considerable
0f t j too wet for that. When the
i water is thut ofl there is no soil ,in
the world to equal it for produetivc-
