The Mask Torn Off.
Salaried "Officials' of the Anti-Saloon
League Let Cat Out of the Bag
(To the Editor)
The Rev. J. R. Knodell of Portland, oiie,'jif
the many salaried "superintendents" of the
Anti-Saloon League, stated theo,therday that
the local option elections this yeur were only
preliminary skirmishes. He said that the real
Idea was to obtain prohibition for the entire
stale uf Oregon In 1910, two years from now.
That lets the cat out of tho bag.
The people were assured four years ago that

the local option law was merely intended to
protect residence districts against the enroncli
ment ot the saloon-
'We are not prohibitionists," cried ihe nip
porters of the bill. "We are only local option
ists." To those who claimed that the local op
tion law was merely prohibition In dlNgul e.
Its supporters presented an unbroken front.
When taxed wltn the fact that their law
unfair they replied by asking the pnhlie tn
rend it. A- the 'a.v was 21' (agM In length tl.o
public would not bother itself by maklg an
more careful Investtpitlon.
Wlien lliey were confronted with Ihe fne'
that slates and communities .ihlch adopted
prohibition grew poor and lean, thev said It
was not so. When they were shown thiit lie
United Slates census plover that only throe
Mutes in the Union had ever decreased In pop
ulation, and that two of them were prohibition
states, they said "Do not worry. This Is only
it local option law. We are not In favor of
prohibition."
When this same crowd of salaried agitators
was asked If taxes ware not generally hlghi-r
In prolillltlon communities than in commun
ities which haadled the liquor business under
the licence system, thev were quick to answer
"It, Is not so, but even If It were. It does not
matter, fur this la local option, not prohibit
ion." And now the cut Is out of the hair. They are
not local opitlonists. They are prohibitionists
after all. The opponents of the local option
law were right. It really was prohibition in
disguise. And I he scheme of the smart allor.
neys. lectures and orators, who make a fat
living out of this prohibition agitation, is
quite plain. The scheme is to start in quietly :
to hold elections In precincts in which their
are no saloons, never weie any stilnoiis, and
probably never would he any saloons. Such
precincts beiug fiightuned with the al'surd
question, "Ho you want, a saloon next your
huu.e?" were easily put in I ho dry column.
Then by adding each year to the dry territory
acquired in this way, they have finally reached
.hat stale of arrogance in which they have,
thrown asldo Ihe mask and boldly declared
for slate prohibition two veal's from now.
Voters have been fooled w th this kind of
fraudulent election long enough.
Prohibition accomplishes nothing for real
temperance or for morality, Bankruptcy does
follow prohl'iltloii and the United Slates cen
sus report prove this beyond a doubt. Here
and then a prohibition orator may Mud a
prohibition town or a small community w hich
has been fairly prosperous even in spile of
prohibition. 'J hire are exceptions to all rules
but government figures which do not lie,
prove that prohibition Is not only a mark of a
stagnant community, but Is a blight .o a pros
perous one.
Prohibition In Oregon would cause 2.W0
buildings to biconio vacant and would throw
out o( employment n.000 men and deprive 40W)
faiualles of their livelihood. Whore is the
prospeiity In this.
Remember a vote for local option now Is a
vote for prohibition in 1910. K WARD.
