"Jayhawkers of 'id"
The Death Valley Magazine,
which is publishing the life of Death
Valley Seotty, will k'gin the story
of the "Jayhawkers of '49" in its
May numlier. The "Jayhawkers"
discovered and gave Death Valley
its name. The story will be written
by John B. Cohort, one of he syrf
tivors who is now 75 years of age.
He was the youngest member of the
party, being 16 years old at the
time.
April 5, 18 19, the party, consist
ing of oG nicmljcns, organized at
Calesburg, Ills., under the name of
"Jayhawkers," and started to the
gold fields of California. They
were on foot the last 52 clays of the
trip, having abandoned their wagons
and butchered thesr oxen for food.
There are four survivors, one a
woman aged 91 years, who carried
a child upon her back and keep in
line while strong met) fill dead or
went intane upon the trail.
All of the story will ' Ixj told for
the first time, the humorous as well
as the pathetic. Publishers have
sought it for 50 years, but the Bur
vivors have now deemed it proper
and fit to give it to the Death Val
ley Magazine.
No pioneer or lover of American

to pay government fines.

Joseph Sijota's place, said fill to be

on said road to the bluff. The said
bids are to be opened on the first
day of the July 1908 term of the
