Cruise the Timber.
Commissioners' Court of Lincoln
county will be in session next week,
commencing Wednesday morning,
when will' undoubtedly In- taken up
the matter of cruising the timU'r
lands of this county for the purpose
of assessment. It isthc unanimous
sentiment of the taxpayers nnL
residents of the county that the
Court should order a cruise made
at the coming term of court, as is
evidenced by the many petition
filed, and the Court being simply
the agents of the people we lielieve
should and will consider their
wishes, especially when there will
not Ik; a dissenting voice against the
proposition, unless there should !
some timber syndicates or t"' ci .
agents, who desire to avoid their
proportion of taxation. We do
not believe Lincoln' county has any
such, as far as our acquaintance g
we believe our timber dealers all t
be fair men, not seeking to 'avoid
any just assessments to the detii
ment of Lincoln county. We all
know that the only way to ever get
an equal assessment is to, let cm
tracts toui responsible man, have a
uniform cruise of the whole county,
require a sufficient lond,and require
contractor to furnish permanent
plats showing amount of timlier on
1 each f,)rty acres- lf we tthis the
Coul"t and all the people will lie.

county writes that they hired John
Hyde by the day to do their cruis
ing. He was appointed Deputy
Assessor, and by his cruise added
$880,000 to Benton's tax roll.
Polk, Yamhill, Clatsop and Colum
bia counties let contracts by the
acre, requiring plats showing
amount of timler on each forty.
All five counties agree on this,
The cruise was entirely satisfactory
to our Court and people." W. A.
Harris, Clerk of Columbia county,
Knvs. "It seems to mo it is the onlv
expense of cruising in this county.
At one time we had a great deal of
trouble about the assessment of
timber lands, but since we have had
the cruise of the county we have
had very few complaints, as the
owner of timber lands pays taxes
on exactly what he owns and noth
ing more. If he owns a valuable
claim he is taxed with it, and if he
owns a poor one he pays according
ly. It pays to have responsible
men do the cruising, then when the
, cruise is completed you feel satisfied
j that you have something that you
can depend on."
Just now while all our people
are united on making a greater
j Lincoln county, let people and
Court walk together, get our six
i billion feet of timberon the tax roll
I at a just and equitable valuation ,
support our Court, pay our debts,
, inijurove our roads and schools,
