Parents.
(Concluded from laat week)
. But during the time that will be
required to bring about these results,
there is something more to which
we must call our attention. While
we are adding new forces are we
losing the old? Are we as teachers
building characters safely guarded
by knowlege and power that will
shield them from all snares? How
many have gone down, just
from lack of power to resist temp- j
tation.and how many more only be
cause they were hot brave enough
to be called cowards. We must
educate in the school and out, that
men may learn to accept as un
worthy of notice the sneers and jeers
especially those that arise from
throats and minds inflamed with
that poisonous liquid that destroys
every sense and feeling of honor or
purity.
This is what gives the custom of
the so called .social treating such a
power to ensnare. And this is one
reason why the abolishment of sa
loons, which must, at 'least check
this custom, will tend to stop the
use and influence of alcohol.
Luck of CUUlagt: uuj LuhmCjo io
one of the great failings of hum
anity, and it is for this reason, 'that
our influence depends so much.
Let us consider the influence of
the young man who shuns the sa
loons, and who adroitly shields the
weak and tempted by bringing good
to bear, and the one who may for a
time control his own appetite, but
by a free and generous friendly.
manner draw around him those
who are less fortunate in the power
of self control, and who in the
midst of the so called, merry crowd,
forget the danger or fear the sneers,
and only to soon have taken the
downward step, which is not easily
retraced. What is the difference in
this influence? And we never
know how far it will extend.
But it is the same with the young
women one chooses her compan y
with disregard lo these habits, and
is intemperate in placing valuation
upon wealth or position . She serves
wine in her own home where
the first appetite may be cultivated
or openly affirms that she likes the
fumes of a good cigar.-
The other whose friends must
choose between these habits and
her companship, by kindness shields
others from temptation, and above
all else tries to live a pure, honest,
honorable life.
4 Now to which side does our in
fluence go? To one or the other as
true as truth itself, and farther
than we may think, though we. fill
neither extreme. And these pupils
under our care, from the tiniest
tots upwards, will fit one of these
classes. And we must make it
within our power to help decide
which it shall be.
The ballot will soon again be in
the hands of the people, let us not
let one opportunity to pass, that
will help gain the victory.
To the ladies may I say, we need
not the right to vote, as there is
more than we can or probably will
do without i't.
Temperance has come to lie a
great political question, and one for
which we should work hard, as true
American citizens. But do not
hold the idea that we need the
right of franchise, as a working im
plement, and are powerless without
it. If we all work with a will we
must win, but if we should fail this
time, let us not become disheartened
or think of giving up.
All Northern Europe is working
hard for this cause. In England
and Wales recent action has been
taken upon meaBureB to prohibit
the licensing of one, third of their
saloons, which means the abolish
ment of thirty thousand bars.
The southern states of our Union
are making rapid progress in the
cause of temperance. If we can
