Will you please read the following,

TEMPFRANCa.
Temperance is one of the- greatest
problems, not only ot oar school, but
of our state and nation, and Is impor
tant to us as teachers, not only from
the position wo hold io regard to teach
ing the results, but because it is our
duty to welld all influence possible at
all times, iu hII pi nes, Hgninxt a power
that cau tear dtr.vii in t-o abort a time,
all we have accomplished in many days,
in our best efforts io make good citizens.
IntemperHiice- means an over indul
gence of any taste or desire, and while
acknowledging the evil or any such in
dulgence, it is the liq'ior habit to which
I here refer. But a practice of tem
perance iu all things will tend to de
velop that power of resistance which
may save many from n fatal fall.
But what some term a te in penile ue
will uot sullice with alcohol. ToIhI
abstinence is the only sure Mid safe
rule. Its power is great and soon con
quers, oon enslaves mind and body
borne and family. i
Over and over aain the story has!
beeu told, of suffering, mis ry and want.
We know it without repenting, and o ,
does he who is just tuning ou bis
downward course.
Why does he not stop? Why? Who
can answer this questtni? And who
can tell us how we can stop him if he
will not himself. This is the one ques
tion we must try lo solve, hince the
only sure wny for the individual is,
total abstinence, u not the only sure !
wnv fni lia In aponmnliul, irnnrl iu ti-t hiil
it beyond hU reach?
Again, how can we answer thi-,? If it
is the proHt that is binding such a curse
to our nnlion what c in we do to tukd
away that profit, only to tiie our untir
ing diligence and patience in exerting;
our influence over the masses that will
not yet yield?
For every loyal citizen who loves
home and country there is a large field
over which his or her influence can be
shed. And each one that we can win
for the right side, takes one away from
the wrong. And this victory will b.n
won only by weukeniug the evil, while
we strengthen the good.. , ,
How is Ibis, r.ie there more strictly
temperate persons, in the lust gepera
lion, than iu the one preceeding it?
Are the young men and women rising
to maturity, under an influence, that
will make them more temperate?
Is there amusmentprnvi led fres fr m
sin? Have a majority of the perso is
within reac'i of your influence and
mine, done as much to provide for tlies.
things, as they have for the mainten
ance of the saloon? Have they even
cast a ballot for measure-", that will
make homes pleasant, and the ai ious
places of am usment of such a nuture,
that young men may be proud to tike
with them' their sisters or mothers, and
share with them their pleasures.
Many ballots have been cast for the
saloons or for laws against it, and then
for officers who will not or do not en
force these laws. If this charge seems
harsh or severe, none ned take offense
who are uot guilty. But something is
wrung or we would not see such results
as ocenred at the Siletz receutly.
We arn glad to acknowledge that so
many are doing good iu various ways,
as we note the great accomplishments,
And consider the many liberties granted
and one, not the least of those,, is the
privilege of local option, which 16 a
great step in the advancement of tem
perance. While many who will' always
cliug to their own arguments without
proof, claim that couditions are no bet
ter; statistics from the different coun
ties in our own stale, where local option
has carried, show that there has beeu
an improvement along all other lines of
business. And in all cases saloon men
work against this aotion. It it because
they are so anxious to pay the license?
But while we are gUd for those, who
are working in the right, we want more
to work with them. It is not enoueli
that a part are what they should be
this great enemy is so powerful, that in
the bands of a comparatively small
number, it van so soon sweep away all
the very fondest hopes of our ambitious
and the brightest prospects of those for
whom we have tolled long and faithfully.
But all this cannot be accomplished
at once, .The manufacture of alcohol
may never bo abolished, as some argue
for it so strongly for medical purposes.
Rut it can in time be plaoed under re
strictions that will protect those who
are following the road to ruin by thou
sands and leading as many more after
them, who are' hardly 'responsible.
Where will we place the responsibility
