meeting of the Yaquina Bay Telephone
Company.
Fred Olson of Chitwood was in the
city Friday evening to hear Governor
Chamberlain and the other speakers
of the evening.
The rain and wind storm of Saturday
and Sunday was a hummer, by jore.
The Silett river had raised 27 feet by
Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Lynch, who is with the Ore
gon Tradesman, was iu Toledo last Fri
day and Saturday, going to Newport in
the af tornoon on the launch Ella May,
along with the Governor s party.
The Toledo Fire Department's min
strels played to a good house at New
port last Thursday evening. The boys
of the department greatly appreciate
the patronage of Newport's citizens.

Rev Rogers conducted the second
quarterly conference at Siletx Tuesday
evening and Wednesday moruing for
Dr. M. C. Wire a ho was sick. Six
were baptised and five were taken into
tbe church on probation. Rev. Rogers
says there appears to be a growing in
terest in the church there.
J. H. Hearde departed Wednesday
morning, after having successfully put
on . three minstrel shows here. Mr.
Hearde thoroughly understands' his
profession, he is a good instructor and
a first class aotor. While here he made
many friends who wiil be pleased to see
him return at any time. The fire boys,
with whom Mr. Hearde worked, feel
very grateful for his assistance and
courtesies. Last Sunday evening a
banquet was arranged at tbe Commer
cial Hotel by Mr. Hearde and others for
tbe members of the minstrel, the or
chestra, the band boys, and tbe com
mittees who worked with and arranged
for the shows, and one of the moat
enjoyable evenings was spent. The
tables were very neatly arranged, and
Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth are receiving
muob merited praise for the excellent
supper. Renus Arnold acted as toast
master and filled that position with
becoming dignity. Everybody, a'most ,
was toasted and nobody roasted.
Stockholders Meeting.
The stockholders of the Yaquina
Bay Mutual Telephone Company
met f in annual session at the
City Hall Tuesday evening and elec
ted the following directors for the
ensuing term: A. J: Warnock and
Henry Veitof Eddyville: Paul
Truitt of Wren, and A. T. Peterson
and Otto OJ Krogstad of Toledo.
The following officers were then
elected: A J. Warnock, Presi
dent; Henry Veit, Vice President;
A. T. Peterson, Secretary and Man
ager; O. 0 Krogstad, Treasurer;
Paul Truitt, Assistant Manager.
R. D. Young of the Northwest
Long Distance Telephone Company
was present at this meeting and
contracts were signed to connect the
Mutual line with the Long Distance
lines for a period cf five years.
This connection had been made
several months ago but no contracts
made. The Mutual company- ex
pended last year over $1500 oh new
lines and improvements of the -system
and has many contemplated
improvements and extensions under
consideration fur the coming year.
Died.
At his home at Yaquina, on Wednes
day moruiug, Match 18, 1008, Noah J.
Leabo, aged 69 years.
Mr. Leabo bad been a resident of
Lincoln county for many years, and I
was an honest upright citizen. He!
leaves a wife and family of grown child
ren 13 mourn bis loss. Tbe body was

Waldport Items
W. H. Wann left Monday on a busi
ness trip to Corvallis.
The St. Patrick's day dance at Kent's
hall was one of the best given this sea
son. W. M. Brooks has a contract to cut
five hundred cords of cedar shingle
bolts for the Waldport mill.
Since arriving in port the Condor
has been fitted with a new cabin aud
after a few minor improvements will be
ready for anotbei trip.
An object of interest on the beaoh
south of waldport in a large wbale which
came ashore Sunday, Tbe monster is
seventy feet long and before being
attacked by sea gulls was in a good
state of preservation.
Prof. R. P. Goin waa among those
who attended the Fruitgrowers' meeting
at Elk City last week. Prof. Goin is
out for the nomination for8chool Super
intendent and took thW occasion to
visit bis friends at Newport and Toledo.
Governor Chamberlain's Visit.
Last Friday Governor Chamber
lain, as a member of the State
Board of Fish Commissioners, made
Toledo and Yaquina Bay a visit to
investigate the growth and condi
tion of the oyster industry on the
Bay. The Governor was accom
panied by Mrs. Chamberlain, Hon.
Jefferson Myers of Lewis and Clark
fame, Dr. Dav Raffcrty a member
of the Portland Park Commission,
and George M. Trowbridge of the
Oregon Journal. They were en
tertained while here by the Toledi
Development League, members of
which went to Elk City and boarded v
the train while other members with
the band were at tho train to meet
him and his party when they arri
ved here. At the public reception,
which was held in Woodman Hall,
Friday evening, Mr. Chamberlain
gave a very interesting talk on the
development of Lincoln county and
the resources of tho state in general ,
after which Mr. Myers, Mr. Trow
bridge and Dr. Rafferty each made
a short talk.
Saturday in spite of the storm
which prevailed, the party accom
panied by a few meml)ers of tho
League went down to the oyster
IhmIb, on the launch Ella May, and
hero was where Jefferson Myers
made a record as an oyster fiend,
and demonstrated to his friends
that ho knew a few things about
oysters, after a short stop they pro
ceeded on to Newport, returning to
Salem Monday.
Judge H. M. Cake Here.
' Judge H. M. Cake of Portland
spoke at the Courthouse in this city
Inst Monday evening. Mr. Cake is
a candidate for the Republican
nomination at the April primaries
for tho office of United States Sen
ator. In his address he outlined
his policies and promised, of course,
to do all posible for the interests of
the State if elected. Ho gave good
reasons for being an advocate of
Statement No. 1. He wants the
Senators elected by a direct vote of
the people and believes Statement
No. 1 to be the nearest thing we.
can get to ir,. He also wants" lots
of appropriations for our rivers and
harbors.

have a force of men and teams at
work on a new road running up
Beaver Creek. This road when
finished is to connect with the
county road at J. M. Bowers' place.
That is tbe kind of push and
energy we like to see. If our
county officials had some of the
same, the people in the south part
of the county would have a better
chance of getting to the county
capitol. We need a good ferry.
Under the existing conditions it U
easier to send to Chicago for our
goods than to go to the county seat.

Corps Tuesday night was, as usual,
well patronized and the sum of
$23.30 was added to the Corps'
funds to bo used in constructing a '
bridge overjhe gulch on .the ceme
tery walk. After the show Rose-
brook's orchestra gave a dance
which lasted till the small hours
of the morning.
